Finding the Right Franchise for YOU
Jack Armstrong
Senior Franchise Consultant helping clients purchase the right franchise or existing business
When most people come to see me, they want to know what the best franchise is for them. But we like to start the conversation in another way.? We ask about what YOU want and what YOU are looking for.?
Location, Location, Location
We start with the location. Do you want to work out of your home, a retail location or a commercial space? This is important, because you are going to be going there and it’s going to be part of your environment for the next 10, 12, 15 years.?
Other questions we ask are, how long do you want to have the business? What's the best environment for you? If you are looking at franchises that involve food, automotive, retail, you're going to be in a retail location.? However, service-based franchises are businesses that you can run out of your home.??
Finding Employees
The second thing people want to know is concerning employees.? Do you prefer skilled, unskilled, blue collar, white collar, few, many, none? Do you really want to manage people? There's a lot of reports in the news right now that talk about a 3.4% unemployment rate. It's very tough to find people in some industries.? Can you accept a hundred percent turnover??

How Hard Do You Have to Work?
A question that we get a lot when people are looking for franchises is, how hard do I have to work? Many people don’t want to work 7 days a week and they also don’t want to work 80 hours a week. If we break franchising down retail, food and automotive are generally open 7 days a week for business.? You might not be there, but your staff is and you are thinking about it and concerned about it.
When we look at the service economy, either B 2 B or consumer services, they are there typically 5 days a week and they can be out of an office or a home base. In consumer services, you're dealing with the general public, so you're going to have a number of employees. This could be like a senior care or a maid business.?
If you are looking at a business service franchise, this could be business coaching or temporary help, IT services or digital marketing.?
As you start to look at the different types of franchises, think of the hours, the location and the type of people you want to work with. This is your business. You're creating a model that's going to be right for you.?
