The right business for you, may not be what you think it is. Sometimes finding the right business fit is very surprising. All you dog lovers out there, you're going to want to hear this story.
Discovering Your True Business Fit
I once had a wonderful client who had terrific operational experience. He was a director of the call center for a large manufacturing company, and he came to me looking for the right franchise fit. When we started talking, I asked him if there was any business that he had an interest in or had looked at before. He told me that he had discovered a dog walking business that he was thinking about getting into. When I asked him why he was interested, he shared that he really loved dogs. He was focused on his passion for dogs and envisioned himself serving them and their owners. When he researched the business further, he came to realize that the business, while fulfilling to him and related to his passion, was not going to be able to meet his financial goals.?
When we sat down and we established his goals, his strategies, his criteria, and his budgets in great detail, I brought him franchises to consider that I knew had the potential to meet the business model we had created. I explained the first two franchises to him and he commented that he really liked them and he was excited to research them.
When I presented the third franchise to him, he said, “Oh geez, Merri. That last one is really an? ugly dog! And I'm not sure I want to look at it.”??
I asked him, “If the ugly dog business could fit the things that we've put together in your business model,? would it be worth looking at?”
He reluctantly said yes to the research, and 45 days later after researching all three franchises, this gentleman invested in the “ugly dog” business!?
The business that he got into was a residential home cleaning franchise where he could manage a very similar type of employee that he had been used to before. He could give them great hours and quality of life and really make a difference for someone else in their own homes. He was able to run that business Monday through Friday, 8:00am-5:00pm, which was very important to him and to his wife moving forward. Turns out the “ugly dog” business was the right business for him.?
