Finding Purpose in the Pause: How Delays & Devastation Led Me to Empower Breast Cancer Survivors

Introduction

In 2015, I was diagnosed with breast cancer. But it wasn't until 2023, eight years later, that I truly began to embrace my personal journey with breast cancer. This awakening came during a period filled with unexpected delays and challenges that tested my patience and resolve. Today, I want to share with you how these unexpected delays became a turning point in my life, leading me to discover my passion and purpose in empowering other breast cancer survivors.

The Unseen Challenges

On March 23, 2023, I was scheduled for a major revision to my breast reconstruction surgery. As they were moments away from wheeling me into the OR, I failed a COVID test. It turned out to be a false positive, but my surgery was postponed for two months. Ten days before my rescheduled surgery, I caught COVID for real! Devastation set in as my surgery was delayed yet again.

During the five-month period from the first scheduled surgery in March until its completion in August, I experienced a whirlwind of emotions. I was distraught, devastated, angry, and confused. I prayed, wondering why I faced so many delays. In the moments of silence and stillness, amid my pain, I found the space to reflect deeply.

Triumphs Worth Celebrating

It was in this pause that I discovered my passion and purpose: empowering breast cancer survivors. The delay, though painful, became a pathway to a new mission. I realized that my journey and struggles had uniquely positioned me to inspire and support other survivors.

Through these reflections, I found strength and clarity. I understood that my experiences could help others navigate their paths, find their inner strength, and embrace their journeys with resilience and hope. The resilience developed during these trying times enhanced my ability to lead and connect with others.

Thriving After Devastating Delays

  1. Employ Emotional Resilience: The emotional resilience cultivated through my cancer journey now empowers me to face new challenges with grace and strength.
  2. Fostering a Community of Support: Connecting with other survivors, friends, and professionals who understand and support my journey has been crucial. This network provides emotional support and practical advice, creating a sense of community and belonging.
  3. Embracing Purpose and Passion: Discovering my purpose in empowering other survivors has given me a renewed sense of direction and fulfillment. This mission drives me to share my story, offer support, and create resources for those navigating similar paths.

Conclusion

Living life after breast cancer, especially during periods of unexpected delays and challenges, has taught me the importance of finding purpose in the pause. Throughout this article, I've shared how my personal journey led me to discover my passion for empowering breast cancer survivors. By leveraging emotional resilience, fostering a supportive community, and embracing a renewed sense of purpose, I've been able to turn struggles into steppingstones and victories into milestones.
