Why do people work? a basic question that every organization, executive and HR professional should ask before thinking about motivation and reward strategies. You might say for money, and you are right. People do work for money but it is not the sole reason. For thousands of years, human beings played specific roles in tribes and groups, each with its own rewards. Hunting yielded food, leadership brought power, crafting resulted in exchange for other goods—people worked for these rewards, not for money, which didn't exist back then. This intrinsic aspect is embedded in our DNA; we work to find purpose, feel productive, and make a meaningful impact.
The youth today explicitly express this desire for purpose, well-defined goals, and a nurturing company culture. It's more than just a job; it's about being part of something bigger.
Re-Routing Purpose & Rewards
Financial rewards, although significant, have a minimal and short-term impact. The youth value long-term career development, job enlargement, a clear career path, and opportunities for skill and knowledge enhancement.
However career advancement and development is a path, and it is essential to navigate it carefully. An integral part of this journey lies in the cultivation of a solid foundation of essential soft skills necessary for the roles that lie ahead. Recognizing that success extends beyond technical expertise, the development of interpersonal and communication skills becomes paramount.
For instance, fresh graduates and the youth at large possess fresh knowledge, insights, and technical proficiency, particularly in the dynamic field of technology, they undoubtedly bring a wealth of innovation to the table. However, a noticeable gap often exists in the realm of soft skills. The ability to effectively communicate ideas, collaborate seamlessly with teams, and adapt to the nuances of a professional environment is a crucial component that complements technical prowess.
Hence, the journey of career growth necessitates a holistic approach, where attention to both technical proficiency and soft skills is indispensable in bridging the gap between potential and professional success.
Soft skills are now recognized as equally, if not more, crucial than hard skills. The emphasize on the behavioral aspects, understanding that how people communicate, think, and make decisions significantly impacts the professional success.
Moving forward from this point, when companies incorporate career advancement and development into their reward strategies, it becomes imperative to provide the necessary resources and tools to facilitate the achievement of these goals. In doing so, they must ensure that their workforce is equipped with adequate learning and development solutions, fostering a supportive environment for continuous growth.

The Role of Leaders
Leaders should recognize that individuals entering the workforce seek more than just monetary compensation. They desire a sense of appreciation, wanting assurance that their contributions hold meaningful significance not only within the organization but also in the broader societal context.
In order to foster this sense of purpose among people, leaders play a pivotal role. Beyond the conventional role of guiding and managing teams, leaders need to be architects of purpose, creating an environment where individuals find intrinsic value in their work. This involves transparent communication about the broader impact of each person's role, emphasizing how their efforts contribute to the success of colleagues, the company, and the community at large.
Leaders should actively engage with their teams, understanding the unique aspirations and strengths of each individual. By aligning individual goals with the overarching mission of the organization, leaders can instill a sense of purpose and significance in day-to-day tasks. Encouraging open dialogue, providing constructive feedback, and recognizing achievements, regardless of their scale, all contribute to reinforcing the idea that every contribution matters.
Your Role
Finally, I would like to end this article with a piece of advice for job seekers. It is very important to approach job opportunities with a discerning eye. If an offer seems too good to be true, it probably is. Striking a balance between a fair salary and a supportive work culture is paramount. This is what truly means when you hear “Go for the Culture”.
