Finding Peace in What You Can and Cannot Control

Finding Peace in What You Can and Cannot Control

As we step into a promising and positive 2025, let us take a moment to reflect on our lives -both personal and professional. Many of us carry invisible burdens, failures, disappointments, struggles we never talk about but feel deeply. These struggles can create a ripple effect, affecting not just our personal peace, mental well being but also our professional growth.

Here’s an important truth: not everything is in your control, but some things definitely are. This distinction is essential to living a fulfilling and productive life.

8 Things You Cannot Control

1.????? Past Mistakes Regret is a heavy burden, but it doesn’t change what has already happened. You’ve said the wrong thing, made a wrong decision, or hurt someone unintentionally. Replaying those mistakes in your head is like trying to fight a ghost or a demon which comes back every now and then - it’s futile. The only way forward is to take the lesson from the mistake, forgive yourself and promise yourself to do better.

2.????? Major Life Events Life has its way of surprising you. A job loss, the end of a relationship, or even an unexpected event in your life - these events are often beyond your control. Fighting them only makes them harder to process. Instead, learn to adapt. Embrace the changes as opportunities for growth, even if they feel like chaos in the moment.

3.????? Other People’s Opinions No matter how hard you try, someone will always have something to say. It could be criticism, judgment, or outright dismissal of your efforts. You might be praised today and criticized tomorrow. The key is to understand that their opinions are a reflection of their own perspective - not your worth. Stop living for validation; start living for yourself.

4.????? Other People’s Behaviour You can’t control how someone treats you, how they respond repeatedly to your kindness, or whether they keep their promises or not. People are unpredictable, and their behaviour often has little to do with you. What you can control is your reaction: will you let their behaviour dictate your peace, or will you rise above it?

5.????? Career and Job Retrenchments Being retrenched or losing your job is one of life’s harsh realities. It can feel like the ground has shifted beneath your feet. But remember, while losing a job is beyond your control, how you handle the aftermath of managing finances, your own personal confidence, getting rejected in job opportunities which you internally know you can deliver. These are episodes in your life which at times is not within control and it is entirely up to you to keep yourselves positive. Use this period to rebuild yourself:

  • Journaling: Put your thoughts and fears on paper. Writing helps you process emotions and find clarity.
  • Reading: Dive into books that inspire or teach you something new. It’s an excellent way to feed your mind.
  • Writing: Whether it’s poetry, articles, or even a blog - expressing yourself creatively can be deeply healing.
  • Walking: A simple walk in nature can calm your mind and help you reconnect with yourself.
  • Meditating: Quiet your mind. Meditation is a powerful tool to center yourself during chaotic times.
  • Following a Dormant Passion: Whether it’s music, singing, painting, or gardening -rediscovering an old passion can give you a renewed sense of purpose.

6.????? Aging and Health Setbacks Time doesn’t stop for anyone. Wrinkles will form, hair will turn grey, stamina may wane, and unexpected health issues might appear. Instead of resisting these changes, learn to respect the natural flow of life. Aging is a privilege denied to many, so wear it like a badge of honour. Accept health setbacks as a call to slow down and recalibrate—not as a defeat.

7.????? Time The clock never pauses, not even for a second. You can’t stretch a moment or relive a past day. Time slips through your fingers no matter how tightly you try to hold it. The best way to “control” time is to respect it - focus on how you use the hours you’re given each day, and don’t waste it on regrets or procrastination.

8.????? Future Outcomes You can plan meticulously, dream big, and give your best effort - but the outcome is never guaranteed. Life has its own twists and turns. Learn to focus on the process, not the result. Accept uncertainty as part of the journey, and trust that your efforts will take you where you’re meant to go.

Final Thought

While we cannot control retrenchments, they can become an opportunity to rewrite the script of your life. Sometimes, life’s disruptions push us into a version of ourselves we were too scared to explore. Let this be your chance to find that new version of you.

4 Things You Can Control

  1. Your Mindset Your perspective shapes your reality. A positive, growth-oriented mindset can turn challenges into opportunities.
  2. How You Respond You hold the power to react thoughtfully rather than impulsively. This is key to resilience.
  3. The Habits You Build Small daily actions lead to big transformations. Choose habits that align with your goals.
  4. The People You Keep Around Surround yourself with individuals who inspire, uplift, and support you.

Tips for Professionals Struggling to Balance Life

  1. Acknowledge Your Struggles: It’s okay to admit that you’re not okay. Vulnerability is strength, not weakness.
  2. Let Go of What You Can’t Control: Free your mind from the weight of things beyond your influence. Redirect that energy toward areas where you can make a difference.
  3. Invest in Yourself: Focus on developing a growth mindset, learning new skills, and nurturing healthy habits.
  4. Seek Support: Whether it’s a close friend, mentor, or therapist, don’t hesitate to open up and share your struggles.
  5. Prioritize Self-Care: Physical and mental well-being are the foundation of a successful personal and professional life.

A Wish for 2025

Embrace the things you cannot control in 2025; focus on those you can. Your resilience lies in how you respond to triggers which try to derail you.

As we embrace the new year, let us focus on what truly matters: growth, gratitude, and grace. Let’s commit to completely letting go of what we cannot control and investing in what we can.

So well articulated Sreekumar Nair . Only thing certain in life is uncertainty. The best way to deal with is simply take it as it comes rather than living anxious about what future holds for us..it never was in our control ( even in best of our times) and would never be even in future. Looking peace in whatever the situation God puts us in, is only what matters in life..
