Finding Peace through the Coronavirus

No matter who I ask or where they live, recently they've been telling me life is strange. All around the world, people are contracting the new coronavirus, COVID-19, at an alarming rate. Death rates are high, borders are virtually closed, families are quarantined at home, businesses are failing, and even getting groceries is frightening. It is an anxious time for the world.
How have you been weathering these dramatic changes? I have to confess, I initially struggled. The isolation is difficult, the financial insecurity scary, and the lack of routine disconcerting. However, I have learned to recognise, and even embrace, the hidden blessings. Let me share what has helped me. I hope you will also share your strategies for peace with me.
Firstly, I had to become very intentional about remaining socially connected while being physically distant. My funniest experience of this was taking a walk with a friend holding a six-foot dowel between us! Phone and video calls have been precious, and I talk frequently to friends in Africa and beyond. In some ways, I've gotten closer to people because the conversations are going deeper. What about you? Have you found hidden relational blessings through this time?
Secondly, taking care of myself physically has become essential. With gyms closed and the weather cold, I had to experiment to find what worked for me. Free Fitbit Premium workouts, along with frequent walks and bike rides have really lifted my spirits - and my heartrate! I also climbed lots of ladders painting the kitchen, and am starting do lots of deep knee bends in the garden. Keep searching if you haven't found the best ways to exercise for yourself.
Thirdly, and most importantly, I'm protecting my spirit. Virtual church and Bible studies provide essential community in these difficult times. I'm fasting from coronavirus news on Sundays, and making it a true Sabbath for mental rest and recreation in the garden or reading. This really rejunvenates my soul. Meditation podcasts, The Bible App's helpful plans, The Bible Project's videos, and other inspirational resources balance the hard news with encouragement throughout the week.
More than ever, it's important to share our strategies for peace, our hidden blessings throughout the coronavirus crisis, and our hopes of how the world might permanently change for the better. Please share yours, ideally with a photo or video, and invite your friends to, as well. Find creative tips and ways to share at https://crypeace.org/coronavirus/share-your-story.
My friends, I pray that you will stay safe and sane throughout this experience. May the silver linings brightly outshine the dark clouds as you transform the pain into peace.
Your sister,
Carole
