Finding Peace and Redefining Success

Finding Peace and Redefining Success

Some of you may have seen my recent social media post about leaving the news business. Today’s newsletter delves deeper into my journey.

It Was My Choice

It’s hard to believe it’s been two years since I stepped down as Vice President of News at NBC4 Los Angeles. Let me make it absolutely clear: it was my choice. I wasn't fired or forced out. I was fed up, and that compelled me to fight for myself. I can honestly say it has been one of the best decisions I ever made, and I have not looked back even once.

People often ask if I miss the industry. The answer is a resounding no! Working in news, especially in leadership roles and even more so with the emergence of streaming, is a 24/7 grind that pushes you to your limits, and I had nothing left to give.

Don’t get me wrong—I am incredibly grateful for every opportunity I had in news. The fast-paced environment, career growth, advocating for representation, compelling storytelling, adrenaline rush from breaking news, and most importantly, the lasting relationships I built with colleagues who became dear friends have shaped a significant part of my life. These experiences will always hold a special place in my heart.

However, as much as I cherished those moments, it was time for a change—a change that ultimately saved my life. The pandemic, long hours, growing demands, a change in leadership, and relentless scrutiny took a toll on my well-being. I dreaded going to work and felt depressed and burned out. Just before I resigned, as I was about to be promoted, my mom warned me that stress would kill me.

A New Chapter

Now that I've stepped away, I'm embracing what I call my "slow down era," and let me tell you—it feels incredible. It wasn't easy to reach this point. I had to reframe how I think about success, productivity, and my worth. The peace and joy I've found in this new chapter, even while launching a business, are priceless. It's liberating to focus on what truly brings me fulfillment: helping others who want support to overcome fear, self-doubt, and anything else holding them back from moving forward.

Here are just a few things I've discovered during this transition:

Simple Pleasures: I find so much joy in just being present and savoring moments without distractions, which allows me to appreciate life more fully and authentically.

Time for Myself: Free from back-to-back meetings, endless HR issues, and constant breaking news, I can finally enjoy family time, a vacation, a night's sleep, or even a workout without interruption—activities that had been sidelined on countless occasions.

Mindfulness: Embracing a slower pace has allowed me to consistently practice mindfulness—whether writing in my journal, enjoying a latte in peace, or going for walks without feeling rushed.

Quality Connections: Without the newsroom's never-ending demands, I've reconnected with family and friends, nurturing the most important relationships in my life.

Finding Fulfillment Again

I wanted to share this reflection because sometimes we all need a reminder that it's okay to make bold choices for our health and happiness. Has this new chapter of my life unfolded exactly as I planned? Absolutely not! But the freedom I've gained is worth every twist, turn, disappointment, and sacrifice. Through it all, God has guided me every step of the way. I wouldn't be where I am today without my faith.

I traded my dream job for what I consider my dream life. Pursuing a life filled with experiences that truly resonate with me has brought a sense of fulfillment that no title ever could. Now, I wake up excited about each day! This shift has taught me that sometimes chasing after what we think we want can lead us astray from what we genuinely need.

This newsletter isn’t about leaving the news business. It’s about loving yourself, prioritizing your well-being, determining what truly matters to you, and not allowing fear to control you, no matter what industry you work in.

I want to thank you for being part of my journey. If I can support you in any way on yours, please reach out to me!
