Finding Peace in a Country in Chaos: The Circle of Control

The UK is in chaos right now. Every time we turn on the TV, open social media, or tune into the radio, we're bombarded with hatred. It's bound to affect you, making you feel helpless and fearful.
What's happening out there is horrific beyond words, and in no way am I suggesting it isn't. But remember, it's okay to control your environment and step away from the constant negativity for a bit.
In times like these, remembering the concept of the Circle of Control can really help. This idea helps us focus on what we can manage and let go of what we can't, ultimately providing us with a sense of peace and empowerment.
What is the Circle of Control?
The Circle of Control is a mental model that categorises everything in our lives into three distinct areas:
By focusing our energy on the inner circle - things we can control - we can improve our mental well-being and become more resilient.
Taking control of your environment
While we can't change the world alone, we can look after ourselves and extend kindness to those around us. Here are some simple ways to practise control over your immediate environment and find solace amid chaos.
Take a stroll in nature
Let the fresh air and greenery soothe your mind. Nature has a remarkable ability to calm our nerves and provide perspective. Whether it's a walk in the park or a hike through the woods, immersing yourself in natural surroundings can be incredibly therapeutic.
Lose yourself in music
Music has the power to transport us to different places, evoke emotions, and provide comfort. Create a playlist of your favourite songs and let the rhythms carry you away from the stresses of the world.

Practise self-care
Remember, it's like putting on your own oxygen mask first. By taking care of ourselves, we become stronger, and that strength ripples out to those around us. Simple acts like reading a good book, enjoying a warm bath, or meditating can significantly impact our mood and outlook.
Extend kindness and compassion
We can't change the world, but we can look to our neighbours - whatever their race, religion, or sexual preference - and offer them kindness and compassion, just as we would want done to us. Small acts of compassion make a big difference. Whether it's a smile, a helping hand, or a listening ear, these gestures can create positive ripples in our communities.
Connect with loved ones
Spend time with family and friends who uplift you. Share your thoughts and feelings with them, and let their support bolster your spirits. Connection and love are powerful antidotes to fear and helplessness.
In these turbulent times, it's crucial to focus on what we can control. Nurturing our well-being and extending kindness to those around us creates a more positive and compassionate environment.
Remember, while we may not be able to change the world alone, our small acts of care and kindness can make a significant difference.
