Article 1 of 8 on Meta Skills: Meta skills are becoming increasingly important for tomorrow's workers because they enable individuals to adapt and thrive in a rapidly changing, complex, and interconnected world.
Autodidacticism is an empowering learning approach that allows individuals to take charge of their education, seeking out knowledge and skills on their terms. The term is derived from the Greek words autos ("self") and didaskein ("to teach"). Autodidacticism is a self-driven learning process that does not necessarily involve formal education. It is often associated with mathematics, natural sciences, technology, and literature. However, it can be used to acquire knowledge in any field- and is a mandatory Meta-Skill for those wanting to be gainfully employed in the next five years. This multifaceted process involves four essential components: curiosity, curation, teleological thinking, and discipline.
Curiosity
Curiosity is the core component of autodidacticism. The willingness to ask questions, seek out new information, and explore different perspectives allows autodidacts to learn independently. In addition, curiosity drives autodidacts to discover various resources and use different methods to broaden their understanding of a topic.
"I wonder" cures for "I'm bored."
To become more curious, approach every new topic or idea with an open mind. Ask questions, seek out multiple perspectives, and explore different resources to deepen your understanding. Keep a journal of your questions and ideas, and set aside time each day to reflect on what you've learned.
Curation
Curation also plays a critical role in autodidactic development. It involves the ability to filter what's important from the deluge of distractions and the ever-evolving "shiny" things that devour our focus. As a result, curation helps autodidacts streamline their learning process and maximize their time while staying engaged with their learning targets.
Focus on what matters and store for later what is of interest but adjacent.
To become a more effective curator, identify your learning goals and objectives. Then, be selective in the resources you use, and focus on those most relevant to your goals. Finally, develop a system for organizing and storing information and regularly review and update your curated content.

Teleological Thinking
Speaking of targets, teleological thinking is fundamental for achieving success as an autodidact. Paradoxically it involves pairing a loosely-structured plan with a specific objective. This practical approach allows them to stay focused on their objectives and apply acquired knowledge and skills efficiently. In case no one told you- you don't have to finish a book or course.?

To become more focused on your objectives, start by setting clear and specific time-based learning tasks. Next, break large targets into smaller targets down into smaller, achievable tasks, and develop a plan for how you will accomplish each one. Then, regularly review your progress, and adjust your plan as needed to stay on track.
Discipline
Finally, discipline is necessary to stay on a path with self-education projects. Discipline involves committing oneself to prioritize education and setting aside regular time for study or practice sessions to achieve long-term results. As a result, autodidacts can further dig deeper in their self-directed journey of growth and discovery as it allows them to tailor their experience TO their experience.?
The evidence of their success (in learning) is their success (in working).
To become more disciplined in your self-directed learning, start by creating a study routine. Schedule regular study sessions, and eliminate distractions during these sessions. Set deadlines for yourself, and hold yourself accountable by tracking your progress and celebrating your successes.
In summary, autodidacticism is an independent yet structured approach to learning that enables individuals to gain knowledge without relying solely on traditional sources of instruction such as schools or teachers. By cultivating these four components: curiosity, curation, teleological thinking, and disciplinary habits within themselves, they can become more successful at achieving personal and educational goals while unlocking more profound levels of understanding within themselves along the way.
