Finding Passion

Finding Passion

Can we find real time practical answers in finding your own passion?

It is true that our free education system does not cater everyone’s needs as it is so competitive due to its exam-oriented nature. A small percentage of students continue their higher studies by entering into government universities. Some get into private universities and some students fly abroad for foreign universities. I personally feel there is no guidance, attention or support to the bigger percentage who do not get successful from advanced level exam hurdle in Sri Lanka. Many such students listen to somebody’s advice and start doing certain educational/professional courses, some try to do advance level exam again and some try to find jobs due to their economic condition. It is the bigger percentage of students that we should keep an eye on for vocational training as we need professionals in certain fields for the workforce other than dominant and socially recognized professions like doctors, engineers, lawyers etc.

According to my view, our students should have a clear vision about his/her life from the ordinary level. Each student should understand his/her capacity and have a particular blue print in life of where you wanted to go. As I always mention, your passion should be your profession. Of course, you can get ideas from the supportive people in the surrounding environment like parents, teachers, relatives, professionals etc. But the student should not try to please any party by mere obedience. If you do so, you will definitely end up with job dissatisfaction and sometimes you will regret the decisions you have taken about your career later on in your life once you mature.

Compared to our time, the job market has become so diverse with many new positions, titles along with certain qualifications for a particular career. If a thorough study is done about your interested field, then you can go on a long way. On top of it, our students should be good in their entrepreneurial skills like communication, customer service, business management, team work, leadership, financial, analytical, problem solving, strategic thinking, planning etc.

Each job is unique and you need to find the beauty in your own way related to your career with multiple skills. I used to use my skills as a speaker, writer, consultant, counselling psychologist, researcher and lecturer to glorify my main profession as a Physicist. You need to take risks and try to face challenges in life by breaking the stereotypes of the society as well. Most of the time, I can see imitation of peers/ superiors in their respective field by being a follower without developing a unique personality. As?Albert Einstein?had said,

“Education is not the learning of facts, but the training of the mind to think.”

This article also remind me a conversation with an acquaintance during OUSL times. That person had a mindset that we are inferior to others those who entered the conventional universities. I vehemently opposed to that statement and replied you cannot judge a fish by climbing a tree, or compare a monkey with a shark on swimming skills. Our education system neither measure creativity nor memeory skills, instead it measures only certain exam writing skills and experience on writing answers on the type of questions we face. I dont blame our education system alone, even the universities in developed countries often fail to identify the tallents. Thomas alva Edison, Greagor Mendal, Albert Einstein all were not famous during their university life. Einstein was recognized as lazy fellow by his lecturers, none accepted Mendel's findings in his time, Edison was a last bench student, well known for his foolish idea on his childhood, which made him sat on eggs. Few months ago I saw an article in media that two Lankan schoolers from rural areas in the North have made a car, and a solar car. Can any of our engineers ever tried on this after their tertiary education? We all must agree everyone in this planet is unique and borne with potential.
