Finding Opportunity in Crisis: How Solar Energy Became a Game-Changer for Latin Trails

Recent months have tested the resilience of businesses across Ecuador. With drought conditions crippling hydroelectric capacity, power cuts lasting up to 14 hours became the norm. At Latin Trails, these blackouts presented a clear challenge to our ability to serve our clients and support our team. However, as we’ve always believed, every challenge presents an opportunity to do better—more sustainably, more efficiently, and more responsibly.
Faced with this situation, we had to make some critical decisions. We wanted a solution that not only addressed the immediate issues but also aligned with our broader commitment to sustainability and innovation. This is how we transitioned our operations to solar energy and significantly reduced our energy consumption.
Turning to Solar Energy
The decision to install solar panels at our office wasn’t just about weathering the energy crisis—it was about taking control of how we operate. Solar power now enables us to keep critical systems running: laptops, light fixtures, communication devices, and servers. With this change, we’re saving approximately 2,200 kWh of electricity annually, reducing our carbon emissions by more than a ton each year.
Reducing Energy Use Across the Board
The power crisis also highlighted inefficiencies in how we used energy. Our older desktop computers consumed anywhere from 200 to 300 watts per unit. Replacing them with energy-efficient laptops that use just 30 to 60 watts was a significant step. This change alone cut our energy use for computing by over 70%.
This transition wasn’t just about the equipment—it was about enabling our team to work smarter. By investing in modern, mobile devices, we’re improving efficiency, reducing downtime, and ensuring our operations are more adaptable in the future.
A Commitment to Responsibility

Sustainability has always been part of our DNA at Latin Trails. This project complements the many other initiatives we’ve undertaken to minimize our environmental footprint and positively impact the communities we work in. From supporting local artisans to empowering communities through tourism, we’ve consistently sought to balance business goals with broader responsibilities.
While awards and recognition—like being shortlisted for the global responsible tourism awards and acknowledged by LATA for community development—are affirmations of our efforts, they are not our end goal. We’re focused on building a business that’s resilient and adaptable, ensuring we remain a trusted and responsible leader in South American tourism.
Lessons from the Journey
This experience reinforced several principles we hold close as a company:
? Resilience through Innovation: The challenges of Ecuador’s power cuts required us to think differently and embrace long-term solutions.
? Efficiency Matters: Sometimes, improving how you use what you already have is as impactful as adopting new technologies.
? Sustainability as Strategy: Investing in renewable energy and reducing consumption isn’t just good for the environment—it’s a sound business decision.
Our journey to solar energy wasn’t without its difficulties, but it’s a step forward in our commitment to operate with greater responsibility, efficiency, and resilience.
To our peers in the industry, we would say this: challenges like these are becoming more common, and how we respond will shape not just our businesses, but the future of tourism itself. By embracing innovation and sustainability, we can create opportunities for growth while being good stewards of the places we operate in.
