Finding a new path - Jana Karciauskiene

When Jana Karciauskiene lost her job during the pandemic, she seized the opportunity to forge a fresh course and carve out a new career with high-end automotive finance provider JBR Capital. She has not looked back since.

No one who lived through the COVID pandemic will ever forget it. It paid havoc with all our lives, to lesser or greater degrees, depending on our personal circumstances. Many of those who lost their livelihoods, a horrendous and truly terrifying experience, at least took some comfort from the fact that they had been fortunate enough to keep their lives.

One of the industries that suffered the most significant impact was the events sector, as venues across the country, large and small, closed their doors for who knew how long. And one of the hundreds of thousands of people who found themselves out of work, as a result, was Jana Karciauskiene.

“I lost my job as an Events Manager in November 2020,” recalls Jana. “Fortunately, I had completed an accountancy course, so I took it as an opportunity to find a new path in life.”

And that path is one that eventually led Jana to JBR Captial.

“It was a huge change coming from a restaurant background to my first job in the corporate sector,” explains Jana. “But straight away, I loved it. It has been an amazing experience. And just eight months after starting, I was promoted to Senior Client Services Executive.”

Jana would be the first to admit that her CV didn’t exactly mark her as a natural for a role in high-end automotive finance. But, like many who have come to the company before and after her, Jana (and her teammates and the customers she works for) have benefitted from JBR Capital’s recruitment policy, which prioritises potential over previous experience.

“I believe that is not about where you have come from, but about who you are, what you can do and where you are going. I believe that as human beings, we have a huge capacity to learn and to keep learning,” asserts Jana.

As a company, JBR Capital shares those values, which become instantly apparent to anyone walking around the company’s office for the first time. “When you look at the people working here, you can see that they are from completely different backgrounds,” points out Jana. “And I think that is one of the things that makes the company so strong. The different cultures certainly help you to keep your mind open.”

While JBR Capital takes its colleagues' mental and physical well-being very seriously, Jana says that one still has to be prepared for a certain amount of stress from time to time when working in the Client Services Department. “We process a lot of enquiries and talk to many customers, brokers, and dealerships. People don’t want to wait to get their funds approved so they can get behind the wheel of their new car as quickly as possible. We fully understand that, but it does mean that everything has to be “Now!’ At least some days.”

So, what is the key to ensuring that ‘Now!’ happens today, not tomorrow or next week?

“Speed and accuracy,” comes Jana’s quickfire response with a smile.

The important thing, though, is managing the stress and never letting it get out of hand. And JBR Capital’s policy of taking time out to celebrate the wins, such as the company’s recent record of lending £27 million in July, helps do just that.

“I think if I was doing a similar job at another company, it could be quite stressful,” reflects Jana. “But successful companies ensure that their employees get their work-life balance right and are happy. And I think that the happier you are as an employee, the more you deliver!”

Away from work, Jana keeps herself fit and stress-free with lots of sports and physical activities, such as roller-skating, running and dancing. However, she doesn’t intend to try out for the JBR Capital soccer squad any time soon.

“Football? Are you joking? Have you not seen how tall I am?” she laughs. “I come from Lithuania, which is a huge basketball country. It wasn’t for me at all when I was growing up, but my eleven-year-old son Nedas is obsessed with it. So now I must learn all about it – taking a new path in life again.”
