FINDING MORE TIME IN YOUR HECTIC PRACTICE

FINDING MORE TIME IN YOUR HECTIC PRACTICE

Meet Rachel

Rachel worked long hours.?She arrived home after her children were in bed.

The problem was, she didn't get a lot done.?

She was spending a lot of time shuffling papers and moving stuff around on her desk.

When Rachel described her problem, I had much compassion as she explained her situation to me.

Rachel Speaks

"Pamela, I find myself starting and stopping things, never finishing anything, and moving on to the next emergency.?

I can easily find myself working on up to three things at once.

The pace is so fast at the office, and non-billable tasks keep popping up and taking my time.

I find myself at the end of the day with many deadlines looming, and I have hardly begun.

I dig in and work nonstop to meet a deadline.

Meanwhile, other cases end up in an emergency mode.

I go from one emergency to the next.

I work long hours trying to catch up on my billing. It is an endless cycle."

RACHEL IS NOT ALONE

Many lawyers spend so much time on non-billable requirements, which makes their days much too long.?

There are constant deadlines. But, without focus, the non-billable activities and other distractions can take up most of your time.

I helped Rachel to restructure her workday. Here are a few preliminary steps she took:

5 ACTIONS TO REDUCE STRESS

  1. She wrote down her "to-do" list before leaving the office the night before.
  2. She began her day with her most challenging task. This practice gave her day momentum early in the day.
  3. She scheduled her email time so that she was not interrupted all day.
  4. She stopped allowing herself to be distracted throughout the day.
  5. I introduced Rachel to the Pomodoro method to work uninterrupted for a specific period.

RACHEL FINDS TIME TO LOVE HER LIFE AGAIN

With these new tools, Rachel was able to reduce her distractions and non-billable tasks.?

  • She was able to leave the office at 5:00 pm in time to have dinner with her family.
  • She rarely worked on weekends.
  • She resumed weekly outings with her children.
  • She found time to exercise and tend to her health.
  • She scheduled time to relax and read, which she enjoyed.

Rachel said, "Having a coach to help me in my law practice has reduced much stress and anxiety, and I am a much more productive and organized lawyer."

I like your posts but they are too many and too long in one go. Frankly, therefore, I skip most of them.

Creating a strategy to control your day is great advice Pamela. It is one of the key ways to help keep us focused and on track with the things that are most important. It is too easy to walk away from work feeling like you got nothing done and you can't figure out why.

It is mind-blowing that the work you do allowed her to have a personal life again without dragging so much work luggage around. Would you say more of your work with clients is mindset or organization?
