FINDING MEANING
I used to read many authors of recent times on self-development and leadership but the vision of Dr. Allama Muhammad Iqbal (RA) has really opened up my eyes and broadened my vision. Iqbal is a very deep thinker and visionary scholar.
Iqbal mentioned three elements of leadership that helps pave the way.
1) Visionary with an eye for greater good. Using vision and energy to help create synergy and avenues for others to follow. Leader is aware of the self and the surrounding.
2) Ability to convey the message that touches the hearts and minds of the people. They follow not because of the power distance or because of the position of Authority but because they believe what the leadership believe. They trust and respect the leadership.
3) Sincerity to the purpose and sincerity towards the people. People are primary. The leadership thrives because of the people, teamwork and discipline.
True Leadership cannot be established without moral authority. Moral authority is a subset of many character traits.
No comfort zone in life. Live simple, purposeful life. Not to stop; keep going.
Reacting on the information or news is a weakness of vision and wisdom. A visionary should be able to look beyond and react to the situation, before the situation. Reacting on the information alone can lead to wrong decisions. Equanimity comes with the decisions you can live with; without any indication of shame or regret.
It’s your actions alone that can prosper your own life. Going to heaven or hell is in your own hand. You are the master of your destiny and captain of your ship.
Whatever be the situation or circumstances, let the truth prevail. Even if everyone is against you, but you know you are right, you have to speak up, communicate as effectively as you can.
We see in meetings where sometimes peoples’ careers are being discussed. A person in Authority takes a particular stance. If the stance is not fair and no one speaks out of fear, this sets a bad example. A true leader has to stand up for justice even if the tide is against him.
Selflessness and not greed. Fame, money are not the drivers. The true drivers are self-esteem and happiness that comes as a result of service and achievement.
A never ending desire and working with due diligence to find new ways not only to improve self but to improve the environment.
Do not make false ideals. Your own strength will lead you. Being a follower means you will end up following and not surpass the mastery of the person you are following. This will hinder the development for you and for those who are learning from you. Following someone to seek wisdom and knowledge is not bad in itself. But do not stop at this point, give due respect to anyone who teaches you something but move on to create your own world.
Nurture your willpower and burning heart. If you want success (sword of your father) build your muscle (like your father). Prepare yourself to face the reality and take actions at the right time. Be brave and consistent.
The way Iqbal sends complex messages in simple and few words is a joy to read and a mastery only a few enjoy. The depth of the meaning cannot be translated in entirety but can be explained to some extent.
