Finding Meaning in the Last Third of Life

Finding Meaning in the Last Third of Life

At a certain point, the striving quiets down, and a bigger question emerges: What am I doing with the time I have left?

For many, the last third of life isn’t about chasing achievement—it’s about legacy. It’s about shifting from doing what’s expected to doing what truly matters.I see it all the time: high-achievers who have spent decades building businesses, careers, and families, suddenly feeling unmoored. Retirement (or even semi-retirement) isn’t always the promised land. It can feel like floating in space without a mission.

But here’s the truth—this phase of life isn’t the end of your impact. It’s the time to leave a mark. To do good. To go back to what really matters.

So how do you make it count?

Redefine Purpose – What excites you now? Maybe it’s mentoring, creating, volunteering, or launching something new. Purpose isn’t a job title—it’s about doing something that fuels you.

Go Back to Your Roots – Sometimes, the best next step is returning to where you started. For me, that means opening up more slots in my schedule for women and men who need affordable therapy. There’s a shortage of therapists right now, and I want to help. I have the skills, the experience, and the resources—and now, I have the time.

Share Your Wisdom – You’ve earned your experience. Don’t let it sit on a shelf. Teach, write, speak, or guide the next generation.

Live in Alignment – If not now, when?

Say yes to what feels right and no to what drains you. This last third of life isn’t about slowing down—it’s about choosing intentionally. Your life is your message. What do you want it to say?Let’s talk—how are you thinking about this phase of life? Drop a comment below!

I’m finding this “third act” exciting and full of opportunities. Thank you for bringing this conversation forward Susan.

Susan Epstein, this is excellent advice and guidance! I'm contemplating what my "third act" will look and feel like. I prefer to live my legacy now rather than "leave it". We'll see how that unfolds! I appreciate you sharing your wisdom!
