Finding Light in the Dark: Tips to Conquer Suicidal Thoughts

Suicide. It's a word that many of us find hard to discuss - a topic shrouded in taboo, fear, and profound sadness. But silence isn't the solution.

As we close out Mental Health Awareness Month, it’s vital to confront this issue head-on, with compassion, understanding, and the hope that we can help those who are suffering in the shadows.

There’s no one better to shine a light on this important subject than Gina Cavalier, co-author with Dr. Amelia Kelley of "Surviving Suicidal Ideation: From Therapy, Spirituality, and the Lived Experience."

In a Live. Love. Engage. episode entitled "Beyond the Edge: A Path to Healing from Suicidal Ideation,” Gina talked with me about the internal struggles of those battling with suicidal thoughts, and how they can chart a path toward healing and self-discovery.

The Harsh Reality and the Beacon of Hope

During our interview, Gina shared her intimate journey with suicidal ideation and her efforts to destigmatize mental health issues. She has developed resources to support individuals grappling with the weight of their thoughts, including the creation of her nonprofit, Suicidal Ideation Anonymous, which seeks to provide a safe space similar to the well-known AA meetings.

Breaking Free from Depression through Energetic Self-Mastery

One of the most powerful tools for breaking free from depression is understanding our energetic existence. Gina explained that from the perspective of quantum physics, we are full of energy, and are constantly giving off and receiving energetic vibrations.

“When you're feeling very depressed and overwhelmed… you're attracting more trauma to you. All I was doing was attracting more and more toxic people to me who would just happily take every bit of energy I had left in my body and not realize even that they were doing it.” - Gina Cavalier

Gina realized that in order to break the self-perpetuating cycle, she had to take responsibility for giving away her energy and start saving it for herself and start loving herself. ?Focus on "cleaning" your energetic output through practices like meditation, positive affirmations, and surrounding yourself with high-vibe people, activities, and environments that nourish you.

As you raise your energetic frequency, you will start attracting more light, positivity, and healthier relationships and circumstances. From this energized state of being, depression lifts, the mind clears, and the desire for suicide dissipates. You begin to resonate at a higher vibration that is incompatible with such darkness.

Spiritual Grounding: A Transformative Force

Another powerful tool for mental health that Gina recommends is spiritual grounding. She says we don’t even realize how much our own energy is being affected by technology like Wi-Fi and our phones. Learning to go within and connect energetically with the center of the earth helps you to release negative energy like judgments and criticism from others and your own mind.

It’s a matter of realizing that you’re part of a big ecosystem, and that you’re supposed to be here. Grounding helps shift your perspective from victimhood to one of purpose and empowerment. When you discover that you have the ability to write your own story, you can fall in love with yourself and craft a life that resonates with your soul’s calling.

Healing through Altruism

One of the ways I've found to get myself out of a dark funk is to be of service to someone else. Helping others gets you out of your head, because now you're giving from your heart, where love resides.

Gina shared that volunteering at an animal shelter helped lift her depression because it brought her back to reality. She saw that her presence was helping the animals, and it made her feel that she had something positive to contribute in the world. Instilling the value of volunteering, especially in young people, can help you develop a rich life since your actions are helping another person.

The Value in Waiting

For those who identify with these struggles, you're encouraged to wait one more day. Often the intensity of suicidal thoughts can change with time. Engaging in activities that bring joy, seeking out supportive individuals, and creating a safety plan are critical steps on the path to recovery.

Final thoughts...

We all go through ups and downs in life. Sometimes, despair can seem overwhelming. Engaging in spiritual practices like meditation and journaling, grounding yourself, surrounding yourself with people and activities that raise your vibration, volunteering, and simply waiting one more day can do wonders to shift your mindset from one of darkness to light.

And, know that you never have to go through this alone. Help is available, and there is no shame in seeking it. Dial 988 in the United States to access prevention and crisis resources for you or your loved ones. Visit https://988lifeline.org/ for more information and for ways to volunteer.

I love healing through altruism, but know when one is in the "deep dark hole" of these kinds of thoughts, it's difficult to pull oneself up and out. So, yes, I am all for every tip and trick the Energy Psychology community, friends, and family can offer. Thank you for every word of encouragement and uplifting information, Grace!
