Finding The Leading Edge Of Change

The leading edge of change is where I like to stay, but invariably I need a push to get there at times. Right now, I’m working on a grant for our non-profit, GreenRoom Exchange, which is forcing me to look at things that aren’t easy to face. I’m having to find and define the leading edge of change.

Whenever you get comfortable with the way things are, there is a temptation to relax into it for a while. It can be exhausting, difficult to keep forcing yourself to make changes. But, if you want to keep growing, evolving and being your best, give yourself a nudge to move forward.

Here are some thoughts on how to find the leading edge of change:

NOTICE WHAT IS BLOCKED OR NO LONGER SUSTAINABLE

We all get bogged down at times. I can move through that. It’s facing something that isn’t sustainable over the long haul that I find difficult. That’s what has come up for me. Yikes, I was happy to be oblivious. Not anymore. Now I need to do something about it. Give yourself a chance to consider what this means for you - either stuck in a situation that needs to change or maintaining something that you know isn’t good over time.

ASK WHAT WANTS TO HAPPEN NEXT

Ask yourself what wants to happen to change the situation. I’m always amazed at how I know the answer to something I haven’t wanted to face. You usually know your truth. Even if it’s something as simple as knowing you need help. That’s where I am – we need more help. Putting it in writing for this grant is making it very real.

NOTICE YOUR FEELINGS - MAKE A DECISION - MAKE A PLAN

This is where things get interesting. Notice how you feel facing something you were perfectly fine not paying attention to. Uncomfortable? That’s good - you often have to get uncomfortable before you’re willing to do something different. Then move forward to make a decision to do something different. The decision comes before you can make a plan. Once you start planning, check in with your feelings again. Notice a lift in your mood? That’s your sign that you are moving in the right direction.
