Prioritize Finding Joy in Work
I've been working since I was a kid. Year after year growing up, I cleaned houses with my mom after school, during summers, through and after my college years. While I didn't always enjoy working, I did learn the value of hard work, integrity, and finding joy in what you do. As I dusted and vacuumed, I would daydream and listen to music, keeping track of how fast we could finish each day. I learned about the sense of pride in a job well done.
Since then, I've held many jobs. I've been a referee, tutor, researcher, driver, hostess, background actor, executive assistant, case manager, program associate, coordinator, and director. I'm a bit of a hustler, a 'Juanita of all trades.' Even though not all worked out or aligned with my career, nor provided financial stability, I'm grateful for the learning experience and ways I found joy in them.
However, when it comes to my career, the work is more meaningful and must resonate with who I am. My work is community-driven, inspired by youth and art, and committed to social justice. My career has led me to working with a number of nonprofits, educational institutions, and public-serving agencies. With each experience, I learned more about what does and doesn't work for me in a workplace. I am now better poised to seek out jobs that 1) excite me, 2) are a good match for my skill set, 3) will challenge me in new ways, and 4) be a good place to thrive. I've worked hard to establish these standards and remain steadfast in pursuing what brings me joy.

How often do we consider what brings us joy? Since asking that question, it’s changed my perspective. During this time off, I've been able to reflect and make peace with what no longer serves me. I’ve found joy in reconnecting with former classmates, colleagues, and many amazing students I've worked with over the years. By reframing this job transition time, I’ve reached out to my personal networks, made new connections, explored new opportunities, and remain committed to joy.
I’m happy to say that it has already yielded positive results. To the many that have reached out and sent me jobs, input, recommendations, and moral support - THANK YOU. It brings me joy and hope. As for my continued job search, I’m actively considering:
