Hello Monday host Jessi Hempel is on leave. In her absence, LinkedIn editorial fellow Samantha Roberson brings you this week's newsletter.
There are some people who like stability and enjoy working on one thing for a long time. And then there are people who start things—it’s in their nature. No matter what they’re doing, they’re always thinking about something that doesn’t exist yet—and should.
Today’s guest is John Henry. Even in his first job as a doorman, he was thinking about how to upsell, improve things, and develop a side hustle.
"I was always trying to innovate upon the experience of door manning and my boss at the time was just like 'bruh, can you just open the door?'"
No, he couldn’t just open the door. John is a hustler—he’s already sold a company, helped grow a venture capital firm,? and hosted a show for Viceland called HUSTLE. Now, he’s helping build a new company—and he’s only 28.?
John has something important to teach us about taking risks. He’s not a guy who was born with a silver spoon in his mouth, but someone who has learned to trust himself to figure things out, which has served him well as he has built a career as an entrepreneur.

??Here are some highlights…
On choosing the scary path: "Can you imagine how scary it is to fight for everything you ever wanted, get there and realize that maybe that's not what you wanted? ... I decided that if it's not lighting me up every day, fully capturing my imagination, that I would make the scarier choice as I have done so far consistently in my life."

On not letting your past affect your future: "I knew early, I was 17 years old, that if I just locked in on any craft with good intention that my background, that I thought was my curse at the time, would turn into my greatest blessing."
On building connections: "You can always smell when someone wants to connect with you because they want something. But when you just connect with someone... you build context, familiarity, trust."
On finding mentors: "People look for mentors on the blogs and in the books. But in reality, they're on the path. I found a lot of people that you probably couldn't find elsewhere that were doing the work every day."
On why he enjoys the hustle: "I like to make things better. I like to conceive something in my mind and put a little sweat behind it and see it come about."

3 年I am driven by hearing (or reading) how others learn through others. What makes others tell their stories, how expressing one’s opinions can light up a thought in the minds of the people ‘networking’ with a common goal in mind. Completion and maturity is ones ultimate enjoyment. We all love to be heard. Thanks for helping us express ourselves.
