As I crossed the finish line of the Indy Mini Half Marathon, a rush of emotions overwhelmed me. It wasn't just the exhilaration of completing a challenging race or the joy of kicking off the racing season after a two-year hiatus due to injuries. It was something deeper, more profound – a sense of fulfillment and purpose that transcended my personal achievements.
My journey to the starting line was not solely about physical endurance; it was also a tribute to the memory of LCDR Frank C Witmer, a fallen hero whom I honored throughout the race. Representing wear blue: run to remember, I embarked on this journey with a dedication to honoring those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. Little did I know that the race would lead me to a moment of profound reflection and gratitude.
At mile 6, as I entered the iconic Indianapolis 500 racetrack, I was met with a poignant sight – the Gold Mile, adorned with the names and hometowns of service members who lost their lives since 9/11 from Indiana. Being a native of Indiana, the impact hit closer to home, but it was more than just geographical proximity that struck me.
Stopping in my tracks, I walked through the mile, reading the names and hometowns of these fallen heroes. Some hailed from towns near my own, and the realization of their sacrifice sent a profound pang through my heart. It was a stark reminder that the challenges I faced in the past two years paled in comparison to the ultimate sacrifice made by these brave men and women.

As a retired Navy veteran, I understand the inherent risks that come with serving one's country, even in training missions. The images of those who gave their lives stirred something within me – a renewed sense of purpose and gratitude for the life I have been blessed with.
The connection to LCDR Frank C Witmer, whose daughter I know from a wear blue event, added a personal dimension to my run. It reinforced the importance of fostering a like-minded community dedicated to honoring the legacies of our fallen heroes. Inspired by this experience, I am motivated to reignite a wear blue community in my area of the DC/MD/VA northern Virginia region, ensuring that their memories are never forgotten.
Completing the race was not just about crossing a finish line; it was a catalyst for personal growth and reflection. It reminded me of the importance of staying mentally and physically resilient, of cherishing each moment, and of making a positive impact on those around me.
Moving forward, I am committed to continuing my journey of fitness, self-improvement, and community engagement. I will listen to the stories of those who came before us, make new memories, and strive to touch the lives of as many people as I can. For in honoring the legacy of individuals like LCDR Frank C Witmer, we honor the values of service, sacrifice, and camaraderie that define our nation's heroes.
