Finding ID Jobs in Denmark

Updated November 26th, 2024

Denmark, known for its innovative design thinking and iconic Danish design classics, has always been a hotspot for industrial designers. If you're one of them, here are some pointers for finding that dream ID job in Denmark.

Notion Database

I've compiled these job listings in a user-friendly Notion Database, which can be found right here:

Finding Job listings

The hunt for job listings can be challenging because of the use of the words product and design - which are also used in many more software positions.

Every week, I spend time on LinkedIn, looking for Industrial Design news and articles and engaging in discussions. And in the process, I also come across job listings from time to time. But that is almost always a coincidence.

Another option is to set up a search agent on LinkedIn, so you get a daily email with job openings. The challenge here is that maybe only 2-5% of the job listings are ID related, and even fewer are relevant.

But LinkedIn is the primary source of the listings. Here are the keywords I regularly use to uncover ID job opportunities on LinkedIn:

Industrial designer, Teknisk (technical) designer, Produkt (product) designer, produktudvikler (product developer), product manager, innovation manager, New Product Development, Product development, Innovation consultant, Innovation Manager, Mekanisk Designer (Mechanical engineer), Designingeni?r (Design engineer), Industrial Engineer, Project Engineer.

Alternative places to find ID jobs:

Broadening your search can lead to hidden opportunities. Here are some other platforms and strategies to consider. You could browse job portals like Indeed, Jobindex, Dexigner, BeBee, Google Jobs, Lemanoosh, or Recruiting Firms like Sensu, People Executive, Unique Human Capital

It also helps to look directly for specific websites of design companies and consultancies, Manufacturing Companies, etc., and simply check out their jobs/careers pages

To find all these companies, you can turn to business databases and aggregators like Bisnode, CVR.dk etc. and look up your favorite design companies, find their industry code (Branchekode) and make a reverse lookup on that code. This will give you a list of all other businesses registered in the same business category.

Industry Associations and Networks (Brancheforeninger)

Associations and networks are goldmines for industry-specific openings. In Denmark, for instance, one could mention designdenmark.dk as a relevant Industry Association for Design companies and consultancies and Plastindustrien.dk for Plastic Manufacturers. Similar associations or portals exist for Metal (metal-supply.dk) Wood (wood-supply.dk) and others.

Suppose you're interested in startups and technology - Have a look at Heyfunding's overview of the Danish startup eco-system at https://blog.heyfunding.dk/blog/det-danske-startup-okosystem - Diving into the different industries, grants, and even capital-funds can help you find possible candidate companies for your future job.

Find your alumni Groups

Networking is often the key in the job market. Tapping into your academic connections can open doors to unexpected opportunities. In Denmark, although we have limited ID institutions, alumni networks exist and are often active.

And sometimes other ID'ers are looking for colleagues. Or maybe you are even looking to attract new ID candidates for your company - Alumni groups are a great place to spread the word. For Industrial Design at Architecture & Design at AAU, our Facebook Alumni group has more than 2.000 members within Industrial Design, Architecture and Urban Design.

Feeling Adventurous

If you want a design adventure, you might also want to look for Industrial Design jobs outside of Denmark. For that, I recommend looking at job boards like https://www.justidjobs.com for US-based jobs, curated by Anson Cheung or using portals like www.dexigner.com to explore the opportunities.

Other tips & tricks

The Danish design industry is vast and dynamic. While these are some avenues to start your job search, always be on the lookout for emerging opportunities. And if you've found unique ways to navigate the job market, do share your insights ??

If you have any tips or tricks you would like to share, please feel free to do so in the comments.

Thanks for sharing, which is valuable for ID job hunting and also connects us ID designers!

Thank you for sharing the jobs Thomas! So good and helpful for many of us. About the algorithm issue - I've learned from others that one way to go around this is to to add the link to the comments, instead to the post itself. So that's what I've been doing, but tbh I don't have real data to back up if the algorithm has been changed to block these too. And good idea to write an article with the link. Will try that too. :) Thanks!
