Finding happiness when the Euro 2020 trophy isn’t “coming home”.

Finding happiness when the Euro 2020 trophy isn’t “coming home”.

What’s on my mind??Passion, energy and persistence.

Can I talk about happiness after watching last night’s Euro 2020 final and not see the trophy “coming home?” Maybe not fully.?

As we anxiously watched the match move from regular time to overtime and then into penalties, the anxiety rose and disappointment set in. My son, on his 18th birthday, hoping for a celebratory win, almost in tears. My English friends telling me, “now you know what it feels like to be English.” The sentiment is definitely deeper than learning about Bobby Moore on my indefinite leave to remain in the UK test???.

And amongst the disappointment and the madness of the fans before the game out in the pubs and streets looting, rushing Wembley stadium, streaking the field and going crazy in the stands - I did manage to find happiness:

  • Happiness that we were watching a full stadium of people rooting for their team that all tested negative for COVID.?
  • Happiness that two countries that fought hard due to this horrid disease were bringing us something else to talk about.?
  • Happiness watching the Italian team sing their national anthem at the top of their lungs.
  • Happiness watching these young adults with so much passion and energy that the future will definitely be bright when the World Cup comes around. And mostly, happiness because it felt just a little bit normal.

I hope our Italian team take time to celebrate this wonderful win and enjoy the spirit that it brings to the nation. I hope that England is proud of a young squad that has so much potential and recognises that to get this far after 55 years is an accomplishment in itself.

There is much to celebrate and much to be happy about. I may not be singing Sweet Caroline by Neil Diamond today, but I will be taking a big dose of passion, energy and persistence to never give up. To fight until the end. To be professional, resilient and confident with the ability to learn from the loss and move on. I’ll be taking this into the office with me today.

How do you find happiness? Let me know in the comments below.?

Well said Keri Gilder! While there's always disappointment around us...it's the passion within the heart that shines through. Positivity matters!

Thanks Keri Gilder - great read. I would also say I feel sadness around all of the disgusting abuse those players who missed their penalties are receiving from that awful minority of people who believe that is acceptable; but the counter to that I do feel hope and optimism (and some happiness) that the majority of good people stand alongside in solidarity with those players who should be revered for their effort, passion, skill and bravery in competing on behalf of our country. Congratulations to Italy.

Fabulous - thank you for sharing Keri Gilder. With Passion & Energy & a Dream, nothing is impossible ??
