Finding Creative Inspiration on the Road

Finding Creative Inspiration on the Road

It’s not just the global pandemic that brought changes to the way people work. The pandemic opened doors for remote work, but plenty of people in the workforce have been trying for years to figure out how they can make a living on their own terms. For many that means freelancing or entrepreneurship.?

I talk a lot about location independent work. It’s how I make a living. You may or may not know that I traded the stability of a sticks and bricks home for an RV a few years ago. It’s been a trip! And in many ways, my creativity suffered. So today, I’m addressing something that’s a personal issue. How the confined space of an RV (or even a tiny workspace) can accommodate the sparks of imagination.

Adaptable Workspaces ??????: One of the first steps to cultivating creativity in a micro-workspace is to embrace the word adaptable. Folding tables, collapsible desks, and multipurpose chairs can transform any small space into a functional workstation. When not in use, stow it all? away, ensuring your living area remains spacious and uncluttered.

Easier said than done. I just donated several of my adaptable purchases. One was a lap desk I couldn’t wait to buy. It was a flop!?

I may tarnish my professional reputation with this reveal, but my current favorite piece of office furniture is my pillow with arms. Does it inspire creativity? Probably not, but it sure keeps my back from hurting.

Harness the Ever-Changing Backdrop ?????: Tiny space living offers an ever-changing canvas of landscapes. Embrace this shifting backdrop as a wellspring of inspiration. Whether you're parked in a desert oasis, nestled in a forest, or overlooking a tranquil lake, allow the beauty outside to infuse your creative process.

I’m all about the landscapes, but at some point, you have move from enjoying the visual feast to producing income. I wonder if the occupants of corner offices share this struggle?

Minimalism Breeds Innovation ??♂???: The limited space in an RV encourages a minimalist lifestyle. Embrace this as an opportunity to declutter and focus on the essentials. A streamlined environment fosters mental clarity, allowing your creative thoughts to flow freely.

I’m no longer living full-time in an RV, but I still believe in the theory of decluttering. I won’t take a picture of my new workspace(s). Maybe clutter is actually my spark—stay tuned.

Digital Nomad Tools ????: The digital era has gifted us with a multitude of tools that cater to the nomadic lifestyle. Cloud-based storage, virtual collaboration platforms, and creative software enable you to work on projects seamlessly while on the move. Leverage these technologies to create, connect, and share from the comfort of your RV or your casita.

Nature as a Muse ????: RV living often means being closer to nature. Step outside, breathe in the fresh air, and let the natural world inspire your work. Sketch, write, or compose while surrounded by the sights and sounds of the great outdoors. Nature's rhythm can synchronize with your creative flow.

For example, I stepped outside yesterday evening, journal in hand. Usually, the sound of the waves gets the creative juices going, but not last night. It was still 98 degrees and humid, with the smell of something (dead fish I think) wafting through the air. What do you do with that?

Routine Amidst the Unpredictable ???: While the RV lifestyle may seem unpredictable, establishing a routine can provide a sense of stability. Designate specific times for creative work, allowing your mind to anticipate and transition into its innovative state.

While my creative routine might not work for everyone, it works for me. I’m not a morning person. I don’t even start my official workday until late in the afternoon. But if you look at my calendar, there’s always space blocked out for creativity. It might be after midnight, but it’s there.

Capturing Stories of the Road ????: Your journey is an incredible story waiting to be told. Document your experiences through photography, writing, or even vlogging. Sharing your adventures not only preserves memories but also sparks connections with others who resonate with your journey.

Cultivating Community Connections ????: Contrary to the solitary artist stereotype, most creatives thrive better when part of a vibrant and diverse community. You can certainly find that on the road—if you want to. Engage with fellow travelers, share experiences, and collaborate on creative projects. These connections can lead to unique friendships and fresh perspectives.

This is big coming from someone who used to say her motto was “Introverts unite…from the comfort of your own homes.” It’s easy to stay wrapped up inside your cocoon, but I encourage you not to do that.?

Embracing the Unconventional ????: Living in an RV challenges conventional norms. It aligns perfectly with the creative spirit. Embrace the uniqueness of your lifestyle as a reflection of your artistic approach. Let the unconventional become a catalyst for innovation.

And don’t pay attention to the naysayers! Many people I know questioned my sanity when I decided to live on the road. I think they thought I was going through a mid-life crisis (I wasn’t). One day, I will write a book about some of the crazy things I’ve seen over the last couple of years, and then, the naysayers will probably still say I’m nuts.?

Life on the road, whether it’s in an RV, in a tent, or from the back of a motorcycle, is a testament to human adaptability and the pursuit of freedom. Just as the wheels of your RV keep turning, so should the wheels of your creativity. From transforming compact spaces into creative havens to drawing inspiration from ever-changing landscapes, the nomadic lifestyle offers a remarkable backdrop for artistic exploration. As you journey forward, let your creativity thrive, break boundaries, and paint your story on the canvas of the open road. ??????

Have you ever dreamed of living on the road (why am I suddenly seeing Jack Kerouac’s book in my head?) in an RV? I’d love to hear about it!
