Finding the Courage to Tell Your Story
This morning I awoke to a message in my inbox from a young lady who had read some of my articles. She was asking where I got the courage to be "so raw" and to "share so much of myself." She has a story or two that she would like to tell, but she is still so afraid, not just of what others will think, but of hurting others should she move forward with it.
I informed her that I was once in that space, so worried about the opinion of others. And while I was there, I felt gagged and bound, stuck between the walls of my own prison, with no direction and no voice.
However; now God has placed me around an abundance of people who share their testimonies freely, and the more I do the same the more free I am and the more passionate I become about doing it.
My breakthrough to freedom was a long, long process, but I actually enjoyed the journey. I met (and am still meeting) some amazing people and get invited to speak on stages around the nation. But most of all I get to help others find their voices and break down the walls that are confining them.
I must be honest and say that even with the desire to tell one's story, it takes a ton of courage. I used to have a very different definition of this word until I listened to the TED Talk, The Power of Vulnerability, that was presented by Brenè Brown. Her definition of courage is "To tell the story of who you are with your whole heart." As a speaker and an author, this really struck me deep. Everyone has a story; there is power that comes from each one. And while it does takes a very courageous person to do, we all possess the power within us.
They key is to push through the fear and ditch the concern about the nagging opinions of others. They may not understand your desire to be free, but you truly do have a right to it.
My recommendation for anyone who wants to step out there is to start with audiences that are small. This could include schools, community organizations, empowerment calls/summits and others who are willing to listen. The more you speak the more comfortable you will become and the more like-minded people you will draw to you.
Through the Bounce Back DNA Movement we have various speaking forums and host speaking events throughout the nation. If you would like additional information, please visit our website or email us at [email protected].

8 年I agree with you, Teresa L. Holmes, in the importance for people to share their story to help others. What are your thoughts on how to bring a story to light that could hurt others by doing so?
