My Story: From Muffled Oprah to Empowered Advocate
Let’s rewind to a moment ten years ago during my coach training program. We were discussing coping mechanisms—those ways we show up when scared, stressed, or feeling cornered. My partner and I identified that I often kept my head down, stayed under the radar, and only spoke when called upon, even when I had valuable insights. My partner humorously dubbed this behavior "Muffled Oprah."
The term is ironic. Oprah Winfrey, known for her powerful voice, built a career on speaking up, sharing her story, and empowering others. Being "muffled" contradicts her essence. My peers saw the same potential in me—they knew that when I operated from my true self, I was powerful, wise, and inspirational.
The exercise's purpose wasn’t to embrace the identity of Muffled Oprah but to recognize when that scared version of me showed up. It was about noticing patterns of self-silencing and choosing to operate from my best self, my goals, and my purpose.
Every Leader Needs a Clear, Strong Voice
Leaders must be decisive and assertive. Imagine if MLK Jr. had delivered his "I Have a Dream" speech with his head down and in a whisper. A strong voice projects confidence, inspires trust, and ensures your ideas are heard. Leaders use their voice to advocate for their vision, navigate crises, set clear expectations, and empower others.
Cultural Barriers and Expectations
As Latinas, we often face unique cultural barriers:
These cultural nuances add layers to the challenges we face in professional settings. Ask yourself, "Do these narratives serve me?" If not, it's time to bless and release what doesn't work for you.
Overcoming Fear
Fear is a major barrier:
These fears often lead to silence and passivity. But instead of ignoring fear, we can use it to our advantage.

The Power of Your Voice
Your voice is your most powerful tool. Staying under the radar may seem safe, but it comes at a cost:
Not using your voice costs you authenticity and self-expression. For me, a painting of Frida Kahlo on my wall reminds me of our voices' power. It reminds me to use my voice, even if it shakes.
This is the work I do with my clients—helping them amplify their voice, move past their doubts and fears, and become the leaders of their lives and careers.

Discover How To Listen To The Intuitive Wisdom Of Your Voice. Unlock The Secrets Of Empowered Self-Expression As You Unapologetically Embody Your Authentic Self
4 个月Ruby Garcia I am so with you on this and love your voice! As a Palestinian woman, I was told the opposite: that I must keep my head up and make my voice heard. But, the impact was very much the same...many people I've encountered throughout my life don't want to hear the undercurrents of anger and righteousness in a Brown Woman's voice. I was often silenced--told I was being hostile or combative--when I was merely contributing to a conversation or asking a question. My gratitude goes to Audre Lorde for showing me how NOT to let those voices silence me... Please feel free to reach out to me if there's anything I might be able to do to support your work. Together, we will help to make ALL women's voices heard. Rooting for you! ??
