Finding Consistency: The Cadence Spotlight March

Finding Consistency: The Cadence Spotlight March

Hope you’re well.

A key focus for us this year is guiding our readers towards (finding) consistency. I know a lot of people with the stop/start of habits, and I suspect this might be because we tend to overcomplicate things. This might help. All the small (and big) things we do to stay well are simply a means to an end. Getting 7 hours + sleep isn't the endgame. Neither is doing 5 mins of breathwork before getting up, walking 10,000 steps a day or whatever other daily non-negotiable you have. These are simply things that will get you where you want to go.

An example: when I did my NNAS (navigational qualification), we learnt about the 5 Ds (destination, direction, distance, duration and description). Direction, distance, duration and description are all essential to getting to the destination, but you need to understand where you're heading before you do anything else.

The goal (or destination) for me is longevity, which I define as having strength, health, energy, mood and motivation into my old age. All the little things I do daily, weekly (or as needed) are simply a means to that end.

Why is this important? By having an eye on the endgame, we can view the daily habits as steps towards it. We don't need to beat ourselves up if we miss a daily step count or eat an unhealthy meal - stay focused on the endgame. Small changes have a big impact over time.

Enjoy the newsletter, and all the very best for now.

Researchers at the University of East Anglia helped develop a blood test to pick up prostate cancer with the best accuracy to date. This is called the PSE test which combines PSA testing (what is routinely used to detect prostate cancer but isn’t always super accurate) with an epigenetic EpiSwitch test in a study involving 147 patients. PMID: 36765779 Big thanks to Dr Yasmin Mohseni for bringing this to our attention on her Instagram profile @doctor.yas_ which we recommend you check out for more science and research-based posts. Here’s a link to an article that goes into more depth.

It’s about helping people understand how to implement and build successful habits and deliver that message in an energising and inspiring way. If you’re an HR Manager or Director or have a responsibility to employee wellness and energy of teams, here are the trends to focus on this year.

What I am Reading

What Doesn’t Kill Us by Scott Carney. Scott is an immersive journalist and author of several books, including this one which centres around his time with the ‘Ice Man’, Wim Hof. Initially thinking he must be a hoax because of the extraordinary things that Hof attempted (climbing Kilimanjiro in a loin cloth, sitting on a glacier in just his underwear and injecting himself with snake venom to demonstrate how he can use his breath to control his immune response). Until Carney spent time with Hof, that is.

I was interested in this book because we’ve recently bought a cold plunge from Lumi and have been looking at the research and best practice for cold plunge.

Carney tells a good story and there’s plenty in this book to interest you. If extremes are your thing – or might be – then this is a great book to read, even if you don’t aspire to climb mountains in your underwear! Enjoy.

Bringing ideas to life so you can take action

To the great delight of both companies and speakers, the last 12 months has seen the return of live, in-person events. Are you planning an event for our teams and your people? Imagine if 50% of your audience felt motivated to make a small change in thinking, attitude, or behaviour. The net effect of that on your business could be huge.

Time is precious, and if you’re taking your team away from the business for a day, investing in a world-class professional speaker shows that you value theirs. It also creates an opportunity to give something equally as valuable back to them: a chance to grow and learn.

I’d love to discuss the requirements for your event, live or virtual. So why not book a free, no-obligation discovery call where we can discuss your objectives and requirements BOOK NOW>>.
