Who knew a state trooper could bring such joy on the Iowa interstate? ?? Our journey back to Texas turned into an unforgettable adventure! Usually, I'm not the one driving, but when Eddie's eyelids grew heavy, I took charge behind the wheel, with confidence. Little did we know what awaited us on the road! Two hours into my shift, the red tire pressure alarm ?? began its dramatic descent from 36 to 29, 22, 17, and finally... 0.
We became the famous roadside car on Waze that everyone spots and pins! ?? Eddie rolled his eyes at me as we frantically searched for the spare tire. Floor covers lifted, side compartments explored, but alas, no spare in sight! ?? Just as we were losing hope, a state trooper arrived and offered his assistance. While Eddie and the trooper scoured every nook, I dialed the rental car's roadside assistance.
To our dismay, the rental company said we needed to contact the trooper or highway services for a tow and car exchange. However, the trooper left had already left knowing we would be calling roadside assistance!
Thankfully, I had my trusty Chase card that included roadside assistance, and Eddie began calling nearby tow trucks. While on hold with Chase, they insisted I call the rental company back, who the said should offer free towing services. If that failed, Chase would be my backup plan.
And then... a black Tesla pulled up behind us, with a gentleman and a parrot perched on his shoulder! ???? The trio, including Eddie, embarked on another quest for the elusive spare tire that never existed.
It seemed Eddie was playing along just to see the parrot's reaction! Meanwhile, I was still on the phone trying to figure out who was going to pick us up as cars and trucks zoomed by.
I decided I was going to call the car rental back, and this time, they assured me that they could tow the car to the airport and reimburse us for an Uber to get a replacement vehicle.
Excitement filled the air as I eagerly awaited the Uber driver's arrival, while Eddie waited for the tow truck. Fortunately, Des Moines International Airport was a mere 11 miles away!
Tracking the Uber's progress on my phone, I noticed it stopped on the map where we were located, but he was nowhere to be seen. I called him and asked him where he was … that I saw him on the app but I don’t see his car ANYWHERE.
Then, I realized he was right above us. Oops! We were under the overpass, and the driver was above us! ???? I called him and told him where we were.?
He said there wasn’t going to be a way for him to get to us and?he next exit was 10 miles away, making it impossible for him to pick us up.
Desperation set in, and I made a bold decision—I would climb up the hill to the overpass myself.
Without hesitation, I dashed out of the car, phone in hand, and with the Uber driver on speaker. Like a ninja, I gracefully maneuvered through tall grass, rocks, and even hopped over a fence! ??????
Finally, I reached the top, waving my arms like a castaway on a deserted island, except I was in Des Moines, UA ???
I informed Eddie of my safe arrival and our successful connection with the Uber driver and he could send the boys to join us at the top.
Upon reaching the airport, a sign at the rental counter greeted us with the disheartening words "NO RENTAL CARS AVAILABLE." But deep down, I knew things would work out somehow.
With the boys, I sat inside the airport car rental, munching on spicy hot fries and berry licorice, awaiting Eddie's arrival.
Soon, Carley and Ryan from the tow truck company picked him up, showing genuine concern for his well-being. When they arrived at the airport, they insisted on waiting for Eddie to find me so that he wouldn’t be stranded by himself.
After bidding farewell to our newfound friends Carley and Ryan, the rental counter confirmed with us that they had?no available cars.
Tears threatened to escape, but then, a miraculous revelation occurred. "OH WAIT! There's a Chevy Traverse that just came in!"
With a big sigh of relief, we discovered it was actually a spacious Chevy Tahoe, fitting all our belongings perfectly!
Finally, after three hours of being stranded, we hit the road and 11 hours later, we finally came home to Texas!
Our spirits lifted, and a sense of relief enveloped us.
Surprisingly, amidst the chaos, none of us panicked—not even me! This experience taught me to trust and have faith, even when things seemed "rocky" both literally and figuratively.
God showed us that there are always kind-hearted people (and parrots) and unseen forces working together to remind us that we are never alone.

Today, we encountered numerous strangers who went out of their way to help and keep us safe. Despite the hilarity of this story, it also fills my heart with gratitude for the countless acts of kindness we experienced in those eventful three hours.
In moments of desperation, the kindness of strangers shines as a beacon of hope. Their acts of assistance remind us that we are never alone in our struggles. Through their compassion, we are inspired to both receive and extend help, creating a world where the collective goodness of humanity prevails.
Let's keep spreading kindness. It creates a better world and better people.
