Finding Balance When the World Feels Chaotic (It Is Possible)

Hey there,

Can we be real for a minute? The world feels…a bit extra right now. Between the news, the approaching election, and the seemingly endless stream of “urgent” updates, it can feel impossible to find that calm we crave. And if you’re navigating sobriety, the stakes can feel even higher.

Staying grounded in the middle of this storm isn’t easy. I know what it’s like to be flooded with stressors that make peace feel like a far-off concept. There were days in my own journey where the world’s chaos seemed to amplify everything I was already dealing with internally—making even the smallest decisions feel overwhelming.

But here’s the truth: even in chaotic times, balance is possible. It just looks a bit different. So, today, I wanted to share a few things that have helped me (and my clients) stay steady, no matter what’s happening outside.

1. Tune Out the Noise This one sounds simple but can be tough to put into practice. We’re told that staying informed is essential, but in truth, not everything deserves our attention. One thing I often suggest is to limit news consumption to once a day—or even once every few days—and to stick to a trusted source. If something genuinely urgent happens, we’ll find out soon enough. For the rest, consider it a gift to yourself to create a little buffer from the constant stream of updates.

2. Focus on What’s Within Your Control It’s so easy to get wrapped up in what’s happening “out there.” But, in reality, we can’t change most of it, and worrying about it doesn’t help us. What does help is putting our energy into what we can control: our routines, our self-care, our response to stress. Re-centering on these little things gives us a much-needed break from everything that feels so big.

3. Have a Daily “Check-In” This could be journaling, a quick meditation, or even just a moment with your morning coffee to take a few breaths and check in with yourself. Sometimes we’re so focused on staying grounded that we forget to pause and notice how we’re feeling in the first place. A few minutes each day to touch base with yourself can give you insight into what you need—whether it’s more rest, a bit of movement, or some quiet time.

4. Reach Out for Support You don’t have to do this alone. Sometimes the best way to feel less isolated is to connect with others who understand what you’re going through. Whether it’s a friend, a mentor, or a group, having people to lean on—especially when the world feels heavy—can make all the difference.

5. Set “Boundaries, Limits, and Limitations” With Your Own Thoughts This one’s tricky, but when those anxious thoughts start creeping in, try to acknowledge them without engaging. Imagine yourself placing them on a shelf where you can revisit them later, or label them as “not helpful right now.” It’s amazing how much mental peace you can gain by deciding what you’ll actively engage with versus what you’ll let pass.

The world may feel chaotic, and yes, some of that is beyond our control. But we do have the power to create a sanctuary within ourselves. It’s a choice we can make, even when it feels like everything is pulling us in a hundred different directions.

So, here’s my question to you: How do you find your calm when the world around you feels like a whirlwind?

If this resonates, I’d love to connect and talk about creating these small but powerful changes in your life. Hit reply, or if you’re ready, book a call—we’ll explore ways to keep you steady, no matter what’s happening “out there.”

Wishing you all the balance you need,

Tricia
