Finding Balance in a Fast-Paced World with ADHD

Finding Balance in a Fast-Paced World with ADHD

I was recently diagnosed with ADHD, which has honestly provided me some relief after struggling on my own for a long time. I found it difficult to focus and stay motivated. Even my passion for things started slipping. When I was finally given a reason why, I was actually grateful.

The diagnosis wasn’t really shocking. It was funny because my family and friends reacted the same way as when I came out of the closet. A lot of “that’s not too surprising” or “that kind of makes sense.” Thank you, I guess?

Since being diagnosed, I’ve been trying to be more intentional with my priorities. I’m trying different practices to help my overall productivity. So, last weekend I tried to do something I hadn't done, honestly ever on purpose: unplug. No social media, no endless scrolling. Just me, a good horror book, and some much-needed quiet time.

It wasn’t easy at first. I swear, every few minutes, I could hear the TikTok app calling my name. But after a few hours, I actually began to relax. And not the kind of “pretend” relaxing where your mind’s still half on work and half on whether you turned the oven off, I mean really relax.

Like many of us, I often relate being busy with being productive but in reality, we’re often just spinning our wheels. Taking time to disconnect, though, even for a little while, can be one of the most productive things we do.?

Productivity with Purpose: Insights from Dave Delaney

After my diagnosis, I revisited Dave Delaney ?????? 's episode of the Be a Marketer podcast. Dave talks about how crucial it became for him to carve out time for non-negotiables like meditation, stretching, and journaling, especially after realizing how his ADHD affected his daily work. He emphasized the importance of committing to these practices, even when everything else demands your attention. It wasn’t about doing more; it was about doing what mattered most.

One of the biggest challenges with ADHD is the paradox of hyperfocus and inattention. Much like myself, on tasks Dave loved, like working on his podcast, he could lose all track of time and get completely absorbed in his work. For tasks he dreaded, like accounting, there was like this invisible wall that made it almost impossible to get started.

Dave’s words really resonated with me. Like him, I’ve realized that being constantly “on” isn’t always the answer. Sometimes, stepping back is exactly what you need to move forward. And it’s essential to ensure that when you’re “on,” you’re truly focused and intentional.

I literally JUST wrote to a client about how I'm in the midst of a massive ADHD flare-up (like yourself, it's a very new diagnosis that has clarified so much for me). It's terrifying and it makes me think I'm going to wreck everything when I'm in this state. I'm learning how to ride the waves of this brain, so that when I finally am able to do the things I need to do, they get done incredibly quickly (and well)!
