Creating a Safe Space to Learn

This past week, I’ve focused on creating a safe space for my new students. They’re thirteen, and it was their first week in a new school. I’ve emphasized to them the importance of feeling safe to learn. And how stress can negatively affect that process.
The same principle applies to our workplaces—we must feel safe and accepted to perform, free from anxiety and stress responses. And in our homes, the need to feel loved and cherished is essential for us to rest and grow.
"...as adults, we possess resources we didn’t have as children."
But you and I know that not all of us had the privilege of growing up in safe and stable homes. If you grew up in an unsafe home, you had to pay attention to stay safe. When your body is in constant fight or flight or other stress responses - you might lose a part of your inner - and interrelational development.
The feeling of being unprotected may have affected our learning in school and later our performance at work, creating an endless cycle of pain.
But, as adults, we possess resources we didn’t have as children. We have access to information and knowledge to help us break this cycle.
The first step is awareness—recognizing the patterns that bring suffering into our lives. Many of us still live in darkness about our experiences. We don′t see the impact it has on us today. We’re meaning-making creatures. Try to make sense of your experiences. To begin to understand.
