Find Your Script
Barry Lewis Green
I am an Educator, Speaker, Coach, Writer, and Creator ... advancing high functioning Purpose and Unity through elevated conversations, capacities and Character. Let's move forward together, stronger.
To F$%#K the Script, you need to find your script. A cherished mentor years ago told me "You don't break a habit, you find a new one." The same goes for your script; your honestly and courageously held core blueprint for living and working. Yours... you find it, accept it, embrace it, and engage it. You work it, and live it. It is your deepest, authentic brand. Indeed, it is part of the heightened journey I have been on, ferretting out my own focus.
JOHN CENA REMINDS ME
This morning, I recalled this from John Cena a couple of years back. It speaks to the message I wrote on AND over OR, and Unity in Diversity... just this week. Unity in diversity is a huge part of my natural, desired and chosen script; since childhood.
WHAT THAT SCRIPT TAKES
Unity in diversity takes an exploration of character. I suggest that it demands it. As the linked post notes...
- "Positive psychologists have objectively measured the presence or absence of these traits, and they’ve found that people who actively evince these character virtues have much higher levels of self-actualization, happiness and fulfillment in their lives."
Indeed, and in deed. Those levels of self-actualization, happiness and fulfillment help advance unity in diversity. When we are comfortable in our own skin, we are more ready to allow others same. I have long said that it we treated sacred texts as personal owner manuals and not as clubs with which to hit others over the head, we would find unity in diversity. Live and let live requires us to live, our own lives. It is the inspiration of Desiderata, I suggest.
- Go placidly amid the noise and haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence. As far as possible without surrender be on good terms with all persons. Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even the dull and the ignorant; they too have their story. Avoid loud and aggressive persons, they are vexations to the spirit. If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain and bitter; for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself. Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans. Keep interested in your own career, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time. Exercise caution in your business affairs; for the world is full of trickery. But let this not blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals; and everywhere life is full of heroism. Be yourself. Especially, do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about love; for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment it is as perennial as the grass. Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth. Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness. Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself. You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should. Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be, and whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul. With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be cheerful. Strive to be happy. --- Max Ehrmann
Personally, I see the work of character education and leadership as fundamental to any exploration and advancement of our best leadership, teaching, service, joy and health. Whether the work of The Virtues Project or The Science of Character, I am not only fascinated by same, desirous of study, practice and lifelong learning and mastery... I see it as crucial for success... individually and collectively, locally and globally... at school, work, business and community.
This ongoing belief and contention fully guides our work, at core... at school, work, business and community. Unity in diversity is not only strategically desirable and advantageous; it is possible. And, it is possible through the practice and sharpening of the blades on character.
I liken character to being the functioning captain of a ship that is comprised of mind, body and spirit. The practice of character can and does help us best and most wisely manage our thoughts, actions and feelings. We give greater consideration to our thoughts, words, actions and emotions. We are increasingly mindful masters of those four horsemen, better able to both harness and unleash them as necessary.
We get to choose. Here, we find our hero within. I believe and contend that this is how we unite. I believe that it is the way beyond the contrived and divisive notion of black or white. And, you might think me filled with Idealism...
... and I agree. I have my own dream, and a plan, and faith in the highest outcome. I choose to walk my talk, increasingly so in my enterprise, education and enthusiasm for life. I choose to persevere. I choose to help make a difference. It is not all up to me, and I have no messianic notion. But I can do my part to live and work as I believe... to live my best chosen script. Some will say that it might take a miracle. Maybe even giving away one. But, What IF?
Peace, passion and prosperity.
