Find Your Release

Find Your Release

Hello Friend,

Do you ever feel choked? You know that point where you feel everything is way too much and your thoughts get cloudy?

You just might be burnt out. The simple truth is, at one point or the other, we get to feel this way. It is normal to get burnt-out but not okay to stay burnt-out.

Fortunately, there are practical ways to combat burnout. Here are a few tips that have proved really effective;

? Find a Release: Talk to someone; a family member, friend, or colleague. Communicate your true feelings and pinpoint the factors that are contributing to your burnout.

? Get a Journal/Planner: List all your activities and plan them properly. Be realistic, take care of what you can and ask for help when needed.

? Take Breaks: This doesn't have to be a getaway or long vacation. While planning your to-do, incorporate short breaks.

? Sleep: Take out time to rest and sleep in order to feel refreshed and function properly.

? Engage in Activities You Find Enjoyable: Do what makes your mind and body relaxed.

Remember that managing burnout is an ongoing journey, not a one-time fix. We hope you find these tips helpful and wish you renewed energy for the days ahead.

Highlights from the Visionaries Summit

Source: SHRM

"...Now is the time for HR to own our table."

Those words were spoken by Tamla Oates-Forney, CHRO of USAA at the Visionaries Summit 2023. Earlier this month, leading HR executives in the USA came together to share valuable insights on HR's role in shaping the future of work.

A SHRM article by Patrick DiDomenico drew attention to some highlights from their presentations. Four (4) of them are summarised below:

? HR Holds the Attention of Their CEOs—For Now: Research by Rick Smith, a professor at Johns Hopkins University and director of the school's Human Capital Development Lab, revealed that compared to the year 2000 when only 30% of Heads of HR in the S&P 500 were reporting directly to the CEO, by 2020, virtually all CHROs in the S&P 500 had a direct line to their CEO. He noted that "CHROs are seeing a rapid rise in influence more so than we see of any of the other chiefs..." Smith, however, expressed his uncertainty as to whether this rise in influence can be sustained.

? To Build a Human Experience, Ask 4 Key Questions: CHRO at Hilton, Laura Fuentes revealed the four key questions employees at her organisation are asked to determine if the company is offering "a fully human experience at work." They are, "Am I welcome here? (Inclusion), Is this a healthy organisation for me to join? (Wellness), Am I going to develop here? (Growth), Is this place aligned with my values? (Purpose). The responses are reviewed to examine where the company stands in delivering a truly human-centered work experience.

? Act Before a Crisis: Focus on Preventive Mental Health: Ariela Safira, CEO of Real, an online mental wellness firm stated, "...most people wait for a crisis to engage with care." She encourages organisations not to have the mindset that mental health issues do not affect them in particular. Safira added, "You're going to see the effects of a mentally ill workplace whether or not your employees tell you... it's going to show up in a tremendous number of KPIs that HR leaders are responsible for—absenteeism rate, turnover rate, etc."

? Be on Guard Against 'Compassion Fatigue': According to Psychotherapist and Author Leah Marone, a lot of times people such as HR professionals, Clinicians... who lead with empathy and compassion are prone to cyclical compassion fatigue. In a bid to "fix everyone's problems", they experience difficulty setting boundaries and end up being worn out emotionally. Marone's suggestion to overcome this is, "support, don't solve...in order to set boundaries for others, we have to create boundaries for ourselves."

Which of the highlights stands out to you the most?
