‘‘Find your lane, swim your race’’

Last week, I watch the movie on Netflix ‘’The Swimmers’’. We follow the journey of 2 swimmer sisters: Yusra and Sarah Mardini trained by their father in Syria. They get the opportunity to escape the war, build a new life in Europe. The younger sister, Yusra is the character who really captivated my intention as she carried her dream to compete in the Olympics one day.

Finding the right path is definitely not a straight line. We all have different goals, dreams, and passions, which can make it difficult to know where to start and how to stay focused. In this blog post, I will share a few takeaways inspired from the character of Yusra I pulled out. Yusra’s father whispered to her: ‘’Find your lane in life, swim your race’’ as she is about to get into the water to compete in a decisive race ’.

Clear vision

Right before jumping in the pool, we can see Yusra calming her nerves with deep breaths while taking a good look of the pool. Creating a clear vision of the destination before getting your feet wet can make all the difference when it comes to successful sailing. Without visualizing a clear defined path, you’re likely to end up lost and frustrated — not to mention maybe even shipwrecked. So, how do you go about getting this pre-planning process started?

The first step is to develop an understanding of what you hope to achieve. What is the end goal? What will be the biggest benefit of reaching those goals? Once you have an idea of where you’re going, it’s time to begin developing a strategy for getting there. This may include making contact with people who know more than you about that subject matter, researching available resources online, or even taking some courses in advance.

Once everything is in place and ready for action, start sailing towards your destination! If things go bad along the way (and they probably will), remember that having a plan actually makes things much easier — because now you’ll know exactly what recourse exists if something goes wrong. With clarity on both what needs to be done and why it matters, you are one step ahead towards success!

Immersion

There are a few key principles to keep in mind when managing your focus and swim your race. First, be aware of the “full immersion” principle. Reality is that you can go half way but all the way through. Take a deep dive! When you fully immerse yourself in an activity or task, you become focused and engaged on the task at hand. This is why it’s important to make sure that all aspects of your work environment are conducive to full immersion — from the physical surroundings to the tasks you’re assigned.

Second, create boundaries for distractions. For sure, they will come in the most snickiest ways. It’s easy to allow other things (e.g., social media, email, phone calls) into our lives when we’re working on something important. However, be aware — this only leads to distraction and frustration later on — not success! Set reasonable limits on how long you’ll allow these distractions before taking action (e.g., turning off notifications). And finally, remember that self-discipline is essential for any goal-oriented endeavor! Without discipline — whether it’s sticking with a challenging task or training hard for an event — there’s no way around it! While Sarah (Yusra’s sister) decided to go party, Yusra was not negociating her time when it came to her swimming.

Manage your focus not your time

It’s easy to get caught up in worrying about the time it takes to get things done, or even how much time you have left to do something. When swimming your race, managing your focus is far more important than worrying about the time. When you focus on what you need to do, instead of the time it takes to do it, you will find yourself executing more quickly and efficiently. You’ll also be better equipped to handle unexpected changes or problems that come your way.

Don’t worry about the clock ticking away, focus on what needs to be done and the time will take care of itself. Identify what needs to be completed by priority. This will help keep you focused on the mission while minimizing distractions.By managing your focus over your time, you will be able to push yourself further and closer towards reaching your goal.

Taking some air

At some point during our journey, it’s important to take a break. Taking a break gives us the chance to gather our thoughts and re-energize. We don’t have to stay under the water forever; we should go back up to the surface for some air. It’s easy to get caught up in the chaos of life and forget to take time out for ourselves. So, be sure to take some time away from all the hustle and bustle and do something that brings you joy. Whether it’s reading a book, going on a hike, or taking a yoga class, make sure you schedule time for yourself to recharge.

Additionally, make sure to give yourself moments of reflection during your break. Reflecting on your progress and performance allows you to review what worked, what didn’t, and what you need to do next. It also gives you the opportunity to reassess your goals and make changes accordingly.

Know that “air” isn’t just about taking a break. “Air” also includes taking risks, challenging yourself, and trying new things. Don’t be afraid to step outside of your comfort zone and try something new; this will help you grow and learn more about yourself. That is exactly what you won’t find in your typical routine.

Remember to take breaks when necessary. Breaks will give your mind a chance to rest and reset, allowing you to come back to your tasks with renewed focus and enthusiasm. So don’t forget to take some time for yourself and step away from the task at hand, if only for a few minutes.

Be persistent

We know how water can have different forms: liquid, ice, air. It’s only see when we see erosion on rocks that we can comprehend the force of water. In fact, that force resides in its persistence in hitting the rocks. The journey to achieving any goal is never easy, and it’s important to remember that one setback or failure isn’t the end of the world. Even if you’ve had a few speed bumps along the way and the temptation to give up is waving at you, persistence is key. Pretty much counterintuitive!

When those thoughts of giving up start to creep in, remind yourself why you started the journey in the first place. Keep your eyes on the prize. No matter how challenging things become, having the right attitude and pushing through the difficult times, rely on your resilience. It’s when you get into a point of desperation that the light at the end of the tunnel shines. Your eyes must remain open.

Remind yourself of your progress too. It’s easy to get discouraged when we only focus on what’s not working, but take time to celebrate the small victories along the way. This can be a great source of motivation and reassurance. With every setback, you have an opportunity to make things better than before.

So…Be persistent in your efforts and enjoy the journey!
