Find and Recognize What Powers You

Find and Recognize What Powers You

Welcome back to The Power Coach, the bi-weekly newsletter that skips “happy talk” and helps leaders ascend, one Hard Truth at a time.?

If this is our first time meeting, you can learn a little about me and the work I do by clicking here !

As a coach, I like to tell my clients that it’s important to identify what powers you - and to carve out time to reflect and recognize those who have helped you the most. With the end of the year approaching, I want to thank the top organizations and people that helped me grow in 2022. Several helped me become a better coach, and others helped me launch two important initiatives: publishing my book, Get Promoted, and launching my podcast, 97% Effective.?

Two groups that have been a constant source of power for me - which in turn enables me as an executive coach to help great people get ahead - are my family, particularly my wife, and my clients. Thank you for your trust and your unwavering support. Indeed, I never forget the Chinese saying, “those that drink water should not forget who dug the well.”?

Others that I want to publicly thank:?

Prosecution Leaders of Now (PLN)

This year I have had the immense privilege to coach emerging leaders in prosecution from across the US as part of a groundbreaking program to transform the practice of prosecution and address inequities in the criminal justice system. Thank you to Dr. Inbal D. for inviting me to serve in the inaugural group of coaches in 2022. Exciting to see PLN’s continued expansion under the leadership of Patrick Robinson , growing from its roots with the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative and Stanford University Graduate School of Business .?

The Schwarzman Scholars ?

This year, the Schwarzman Scholars gave me the opportunity to bridge two areas of my expertise: my work coaching global leaders, and my corporate career, which has spanned four decades on the ground or connected to China. It was hugely meaningful to co-teach a course to scholars on Influence and Power, working alongside my talented Stanford GSB classmates, fellow executive coaches Agnes Le and Celine Teoh ! I’m so proud to serve a program committed to helping global leaders deepen their understanding between China and the rest of the world.?

Columbia Coaching Certification Program (3CP)

The quest to become a better coach never ends. 3CP allowed me to join a community of diverse and committed coaches as we forged new paths and strove to achieve greater mastery of coaching. Thank you to fellow executive coach Sharon Ruwart for recommending the program, my fantastic Cohort 26, and to the amazing core teaching team under the leadership of Program Director, Dr. Terrence E. Maltbia .?

Behind the scenes

The Acknowledgement section of my book recognised the most important people who inspired and supported me in the writing and editing process, but here I want to call out the talented “behind the scenes” group of individuals who have helped edit, publish, produce, and market my book... and podcast!? Thank you for supporting and challenging me —and getting my work in front of the right people! Richard Waine (photographer extraordinaire), Steve Gordon , Brittany Lin , Marie Incontrera , Katy Lindhart, Jon Hugo Ungar ; David Wolf, Erika Yocom , Shaun Hettinger (Go Eagles!), Chip Davis, Juan Avellan, Clara Posner , Jen Zappone .?

My coaching community

Finally, thank you to the community of stellar executive coaches who have inspired me, provided advice, or have been great pacing partners: Dr Kevin Williams , Dr Inbal D. , Raquel Gonzalez-Dalmau ; Ed Batista , Sharon Ruwart , Michael Urtuzuástegui Melcher , Rebecca Zucker ; Jenny Fernandez, MBA, 费 珍妮 ; Ron Carucci ; Celine Teoh , Agnes Le … I can’t thank you enough for making me a better coach every day.?

Readers, I hope that you also find what and who powers you, and that you take some time to thank them as well.
