Find magic in your everyday life through glimmers

Find magic in your everyday life through glimmers

Have you heard of 'glimmers'? It is a concept I heard about recently from two sources in one day so naturally went off to learn more.

Put simply, glimmers are the opposite of triggers:

  • Triggers ?? are the things that activate your nervous system moving it into a stress response.
  • Glimmers ?? are tiny moments of joy that help calm the nervous system.

Originally defined by Deb Dana, you can go and read the science behind if it you are interested.

Glimmers can be brief and easy to miss, and for busy leaders juggling many priorities in work and life, it might not be something that you prioritise. However you can train your brain to look out for them, and as with most things, the more you look for them, the more you see.

They can make a good day better and lift your spirits on a harder day. They can help your mental health and wellbeing.

Having done a little bit of reading about the topic, a lot of focus is given to getting outside and seeing natural beauty. If you have a day of back to back calls however, this isn't always possible. Look up from this now and look around you - is there anything that brings you joy? Can you manage to take even a short break and walk outside?

Some of my recent glimmers have included:

?? A very pretty pink sunset

?? Stopping to stroke a handsome tabby cat on my way to the office

?? Smelling a Christmas candle and getting my first festive whiff of the year!

?? Running in the rain (some time ago this would not have been on my joy list)

?? Every time I check Eventbrite and someone has bought a ticket for my upcoming event for the girls charity GFS

?? A perfect cup of tea

?? A Coachee saying that our session has helped them have many lightbulb moments

I wanted to share the concept with you for starters, and invite you to join me actively looking for your glimmers. When you see something - please share!

You just need find joy in everyday moments. I can relate to your experience with the pink sunset and that cozy feeling from a favorite candle. It’s those little sparks that make a difference, especially on tougher days.

WFH today so my first glimmer or ‘sparkling moment’ was two woodpeckers in the garden ?? and then a second closing with an evening squish with the little people ??
