Meet Maaria Tiensivu, Founder of The Four Languages and Know-Me. Maaria is focused on two revolutionary initiatives. The first is an assessment tool that helps teams and companies identify core challenges in PeopleOps, eliminating wasteful spending on fruitless initiatives. The second is a transformative holistic wellbeing community called the Four Languages, where the body, heart, soul, and mind converge, offering a diverse range of activities for self-exploration and meaningful experiences. ?

Maaria has been fully location-independent since 2019 and travels with an open-ended, one-way-ticket mentality. She brings the “hygge” feeling wherever she is, making every place her home and building a sense of community through the Four Languages community core values.

??How do you take care of yourself when nomading?

I tend to have different lifestyles depending on where I am as a location-independent traveler, as making the most out of each location’s vibe is very important to me. This means that instead of going through the same checklist in each place, I tend to find the activities that are uniquely great in that location.

Even with the routines I engage with wherever I am, I adapt them to the specific situation.?

  • In Latin America, my mornings tend to be dedicated to work, and my personal routines shift to the evenings.
  • In Europe, I tend to focus more on myself in the morning.

Empowered by my holistic wellbeing community, The Four Languages, we create weekly experiments rotating between mind, soul, heart, and body. With this liberating approach, I nurture myself without ever feeling constrained by a rigid routine. Life, after all, is about change and adaptation.

With The UNBOUND podcast, I dive into the real experience of living location independently.

?? How do you find community as a nomad??

I aspire to create a "normal" life wherever I go, immersing myself in the local culture and building meaningful connections with those who call that place home. However, socialising mostly with locals and long-term residents can be challenging because I know I’ll only see the people again if I return. This is one of the reasons I tend to return to the same places where my heart feels most at home, like Brazil.

On a boat trip at Running Remote, Lisbon, April 2023.

Some of my ways to find locals include:

  • Social media platforms and apps: Let me know when friends are in the same location
  • Events: Help me stay connected with like-minded people.
  • Friends of friends: They always share with me the secret spots!
  • Coworking spaces: For productivity and meeting entrepreneurs

I connect with most of my closest friends and long-term community mostly online and see them whenever we’re in the same place. I also have the privilege of deeply connecting with incredible humans through The Four Languages community, where long-term (and soon also aspiring!) nomads come together to connect with each other and their Selves through weekly experiments.

?? How do you consider the planet and minimise your impact?

I think about this A LOT, and it’s one of the core reasons I don’t travel as much as I might otherwise. For instance,? I try to stick to one continent at a time to minimize long-distance travel and only change between continents for longer periods of time.

Some of my environmental practices include:

  • Being a long-term vegetarian (vegan whenever possible)
  • I avoid using bottled water unless necessary?
  • Learn about the local environmental challenges wherever I go.
  • I reduce microplastic by opting for high-quality and natural materials
  • Practice minimalism, carrying only essential items
  • Only replace items that are broken and cannot be repaired.

Latin America feels like home, so I constantly return and stay here for a good period of time! Now, you can find working remotely from Ecuador.
