Find balance and model it

Find balance and model it

As leaders in business, we often talk about the importance of work-life balance. But how often do we model it for our teams?

Demonstrating balance with a level of compassion – especially during stressful times – is not just beneficial, it’s essential.

One practice I have adopted is riding my bike to work. It’s a simple yet powerful way to start the day with clarity and energy. My morning ritual isn't just about physical fitness; it’s about setting an example. When my team sees me prioritizing my well-being, it sends a message that taking care of yourself is vital.

Why is this so important? According to a Gallup article , “76 percent of employees experience burnout at least sometimes, and 28 percent say they are burned out very often or always at work.” Gallup adds that it's a common myth that simply reducing hours will solve employee burnout.

Burnout not only affects work productivity but also leads to increased absenteeism, higher turnover rates and a decline in morale.

Company leaders can mitigate these risks by fostering an environment that values balance and well-being, and making team members feel appreciated. It is demonstrated by how we show up and lead.

Activities like biking to work help my team see that I care about my own health. It also helps reduce my stress, improve my day and boost my overall energy. And it clears my mind to better focus on decision-making throughout the day. It’s a natural way to recharge and maintain the stamina I need to lead effectively.

In times of stress and anxiety – and we all know there’s plenty of that going around these days – our teams need strong models and reassurance. Showing compassion isn’t just about understanding their challenges; it's about demonstrating through our actions that we value and support a balanced life.

Whether it’s encouraging regular breaks, promoting flexible work hours or simply listening to a personal story, being empathetic and showing compassion can make a considerable difference.

As leaders, we can’t pour from an empty cup. Taking care of ourselves allows us to show up for our teams.

So the next time you think about the importance of work-life balance, ask yourself: Am I living it? Am I demonstrating it to my team?

Leading by example and taking care of ourselves are the first steps in taking care of business.

I will admit, I sometimes struggle with the “work/life” balance. I take long walks in the morning down my driveway with a nice cigar to de-stress and in the afternoon it’s pool time.

Such a great reminder to set the example!

Well put! I myself try to get into the pool once or twice a week to zone out. I feel utterly refreshed after swimming for 45 min or so. My mind is blank. No worries. Just focused on the water.
