It's essential to recognise the potential impact and benefits of transforming industrial centers into industrial clusters. By focusing on private sector investments, we can bring about efficiency gains and facilitate a supportive/enabling business environment. This approach offers various advantages.
As the PPP Team Lead, I spearheaded the transformation of 26 industrial centers into six (6) industrial clusters in the six geopolitical zones. Our assessment revealed that despite government investments, many small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) within these industrial centers were not operating at their full potential. These 26 industrial centers were established after Nigerian independence to accentuate economic development. The federal government invested massive resources in these centres. Over the years, the infrastructure had degenerated.
Industrial clusters serve as vital catalysts for the development and growth of a nation, creating jobs and forming the backbone of economic activities. SMEs play a crucial role in the global economy, contributing over 95% of economic activities in the leading six industrial nations of China, USA, Japan, Germany, France and the UK.
In 2020, the Idu Cluster was specifically designated by the federal government to focus on furniture and wood enterprise. Private sector investments come with efficiency gains, needed to improve returns at these Clusters.
Private sector investments in these clusters offer significant benefits, such as facilitating easier measurement and comparison of SME performance, providing a concentration of specialized talent, sharing common infrastructure tailored to the cluster's needs, and fostering a supportive business environment.
Furthermore, firms within these clusters can benefit from shared input supplies, labour resources, economies of scale, lower production costs, and increased sales.
The Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria (SMEDAN) plays a pivotal role in developing and enhancing SMEs through various mechanisms, contributing to the overall growth and success of Nigeria's industrial clusters.
