National Suicide Prevention Month

Suicide, its causes, awareness around it, and its prevention are observed on National Suicide Prevention Month in September.

Did you know:

  • 10 – the ranking of suicide as the leading cause of death in the U.S.?
  • 47,511 – Americans who died by suicide in 2019.
  • 1.38 million – the number of suicide attempts in the U.S. in 2019.
  • 13.93 – the age-adjusted suicide rate per 100,000 individuals.
  • 50% – the percentage increase in suicides among girls and women between 2000 and 2016.
  • 69.38% – the percentage of white males who accounted for suicide deaths in 2019.?
  • 50.39% – the percentage of all suicides by firearms.
  • 93% – the percentage of Americans surveyed who think suicide can be prevented.

In the darkest corners of despair, where hope dwindles and pain overshadows every moment, there exists a silent crisis that affects millions of people worldwide. It's a crisis that strikes without warning, tearing apart families, friendships, and communities. It's a crisis that demands our unwavering attention and action. September is National Suicide Prevention Month, a time when we must rally together to combat this silent killer that haunts our society.

The urgency of this matter cannot be overstated. As of my last knowledge update in September 2021, suicide was one of the leading causes of death globally, with nearly 800,000 lives lost each year. That's more than mere statistics; it's a staggering and heartbreaking reality. Every one of those lives was a person with dreams, aspirations, and loved ones left in anguish. The pain caused by suicide is immeasurable, and it leaves a void that can never truly be filled.

However, we must remember that there is hope. The power to save lives lies within us all. During National Suicide Prevention Month, we have the opportunity to reach out, to connect, and to offer support to those in need. We can raise awareness of mental health issues, reduce stigma, and let people know that they are not alone in their struggles.

The need for action is urgent. The emotional toll of the past years, marked by the COVID-19 pandemic and its economic and social repercussions, has exacerbated mental health challenges. Isolation, anxiety, and depression have become more prevalent, increasing the risk of suicide for many individuals. The latest available statistics are a stark reminder that we cannot afford to remain complacent.

To truly honor National Suicide Prevention Month, let us pledge to listen, to empathize, and to seek help when needed. Reach out to friends, family, and colleagues who may be struggling. Encourage open conversations about mental health, and advocate for better access to mental health services. Together, we can create a society where suicide is a rare and preventable tragedy.

National Suicide Prevention Month is not just a month on the calendar; it's a call to action. Let us seize this moment to save lives, to show compassion, and to build a world where hope shines brighter than despair. The time to act is now, and together, we can make a difference. ?

?What can we do to help? According to the CDC

  • Ask "Are you thinking of killing yourself?" (While people may be hesitant to ask, research shows this is helpful.)
  • Keep them safe. Reduce access to lethal items or places.
  • Be there with them. Listen carefully and acknowledge their feelings.
  • Help them connect. Call or text the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline.
  • Stay connected. Follow up and stay in touch after a crisis.

Are You Prepared for a "Fed-Induced" Recession?

The Fed has raised rates 5 times this year in an effort to slow inflation.

The Federal Reserve has raised interest rates 11 times since March 2022. The most recent rate hike was in July 2023. The Fed's benchmark interest rate is now in a target range of 5.5 percent, the highest level in 22 years.

The Fed is raising interest rates in an effort to combat inflation. Inflation is at a 40-year high, and the Fed is trying to bring it down to its 2 percent target. Raising interest rates makes it more expensive to borrow money, which can help to slow down the economy and bring down inflation.

However, raising interest rates can also have negative consequences. It can make it more expensive to buy a house or a car, and it can also make it harder for businesses to borrow money to invest and grow. The Fed is trying to raise interest rates in a way that will slow down the economy without causing a recession.

Now Is the Time to Harness the Power of Talent in the Modern Workforce!

Are you ready to learn about attracting and keeping talented employees in tough times? We're here to help!

The way people work is changing, and businesses struggle to find and keep good employees. That's a big problem because having the right people is crucial for success.

In the hospitality industry, having the right team is very important because people are our business.

But now, things are even more challenging with people leaving their jobs silently (we call it "quiet quitting") and others just quitting altogether.

The numbers show a clear picture: 68% of organizations can't find enough people to hire. Especially, since the pandemic. Employee disengagement is a big problem. It costs businesses about $550 billion every year in lost productivity.

To not only survive but thrive in this ever-evolving landscape, organizations must take immediate, strategic steps to not only attract but retain the passionate and committed individuals who will shape our industry's future. This is especially critical for attracting the next generation of talent.

The hospitality sector has always been about its people. They are the face of our industry, providing exceptional customer experiences every day. Creating a strong company culture that values people is necessary for long-term growth.

Leadership is the linchpin of this transformation. Recent research shows that companies with inclusive leadership teams are 2.3 times more likely to be innovative and 1.7 times more likely to be change-ready. As leaders, it's crucial to keep learning and show empathy. This is important for 89% of employees' job satisfaction.

Miserable employees yield poor results, and the statistics bear this out. Employees who are not engaged are 37% more likely to take sick days. This costs companies about $84 billion per year. Leaders must act and solve the problem by creating a culture that values people.

Outdated working practices are costing businesses dearly. Companies embracing job flexibility have seen a 22% increase in employee productivity. Organizations that focus on training and development enjoy 24% higher profit margins. More and more, people appreciate leaders who show empathy. Actually, 58% of workers would trust their boss more if they were more understanding.

Losing talent can cost up to 213% of an executive's salary, so don't underestimate it. As prices go up, businesses need to focus on strong values and a positive team culture. These things are important for motivation, alignment, loyalty, and ultimately, making money.

Remember, a sense of fun at work is not a luxury but a necessity. It encourages communication, collaboration, positive mindsets, well-being, and better mental health. In the end, if you don't enjoy what you do, it's time to change the game.

Instilling a human-centric company culture isn't just a choice; it's imperative. Act now to secure your organization's future in these transformative times.

September is National Preparedness Month?

In the face of relentless adversity, it is our duty as responsible citizens to stand prepared, vigilant, and united. National Preparedness Month, observed annually in September, serves as a stark reminder of the world we live in, where unforeseen disasters strike without warning, sparing none. This is not a mere campaign; it is a rallying cry to safeguard our lives, our loved ones, and our communities.

As the world evolves, so do the threats we face. Staying informed about the latest statistics is crucial, as it sheds light on the gravity of the situation. Recent statistics have shown the devastating impact of natural disasters and public health crises, underscoring the urgency of National Preparedness Month.

Consider this: emergency response times are crucial, and being prepared can make all the difference. Statistics consistently reveal that a well-stocked emergency kit, a practiced evacuation plan, and knowledge of local resources can save lives. National Preparedness Month is not about fear; it's about empowerment. It's about arming ourselves with the tools and knowledge needed to face adversity head-on.

Let's be honest; it's easy to procrastinate when it comes to preparedness. But the consequences of our inaction are too great to ignore, as statistics have shown time and again. This is not a problem for tomorrow; it's a call to action for today. National Preparedness Month challenges us to prioritize preparedness, to invest time and effort into ensuring our safety and that of our families.

Now, more than ever, we must come together as a nation, as communities, and as families. National Preparedness Month is a collective endeavor, a reminder that our resilience lies not just in our ability to endure but in our commitment to prepare. It's a promise to ourselves and to each other that we will not be caught off guard, that we will stand strong in the face of adversity, and that we will emerge from any crisis stronger than before.

Leadership Thought

It never fails to impress me that leadership is the privilege to make people better than they are now, by helping them to see the gifts they already possess.
