In commemoration of the International Women's Day 2024, our CEO, Obi Ibekwe joined other women leaders across the globe to speak on the topic: 'Perspectives from Women Leaders across Continents' at Leading Across Continents, an online session hosted by FinanceMalta and the World Alliance of International Financial Centers (WAIFC).
Excerpts: Lamia MERZOUKI to Obi Ibekwe: What are some of the challenges you have faced as a woman leader in Africa and how have you overcome them?
Obi Ibekwe: "I have always believed as a woman that I needed to take a long term view of my career... I have had three pivotal moments in my career journey that culminated in my being able to transcend into leadership rank. Earlier in my career, I was trained as a lawyer and practised as an attorney. Two years into this, I knew that that was not what I wanted so I sought and got a job in the legal department of a bank. Two years into this again, I realised being in the legal department would not take me to where I wanted to be hence, I approached the management to express my desire to join the mainstream banking team. This implied that I would have to forgo my promotion which I was due for and accept to undergo a year training after which I would be assessed..." I scaled through and joined the corporate banking department and rose to becoming one of the first female branch in the bank. I would later resign to earn an MBA degree. It was a big risk that eventually paid off..." "As a woman, you need to know what you want and be ready to make the sacrifice to prepare yourself and to take the necessary risks to achieve it..."
