Finally in the Spotlight

Finally in the Spotlight

Dr. Leana Wen put it best: “public health is by definition invisible, because it's about prevention.” It’s valuable, but chronically underfunded by governments. Public health is often ignored for flashier health interventions. That is, until now. COVID-19 is a dramatic example of the importance of prevention. People have seen that a single vaccine dose can be the difference between life and death. From twitter comments, to group chats, to news, public health is part of everyday conversations. Plus, a record number of students are pursuing public health degrees. Public health finally has the spotlight.

However, visibility has its drawbacks. In a report by the Centers for Disease Control, 24% of 26,000 surveyed state, tribal, local, and territorial public health workers felt bullied, threatened or harassed. Almost 12% of workers received job-related threats. Additionally, an investigation by The Associated Press and KHN found that at least 303 state and local public health department leaders have resigned, retired, or been fired during the pandemic.

There is momentum, interest, and passion for public health, but not all of it positive. COVID-19 created divisions that led to public health being both beloved and hated. This presents a new challenge for the field, as protecting the well-being of people extends to public health professionals themselves. Moving forward, the public health sector should consider these questions:

· How do we promote public health, while protecting the professionals in the spotlight?

· How do we prepare incoming public health professionals for this “new normal?”

· How do we create momentum for greater funding for public health?

Learn more about public health on this week’s episode of Her Story with Dr. Leana Wen, airing Wednesday October 13th.
