Acknowledgement:

The Ph.D. degree symbolizes an important milestone of my life. The research work presented in the thesis is an outcome of the blessings and help of numerous people. Therefore, I do hereby express my thanks and gratitude to all the concerned for the numerous supports extended to me for the completion of this work. My foremost gratitude goes to the almighty god, without whose kind blessings, I would not have accomplished my goals. God has given me the strength to stay calm, sincere & focused, and determination & strength to sail through the challenges.

I am very fortunate for being the only-child to Mrs. Snigdha Rani Pattnayak and Mr. Rama Ranjan Pattnayak, who have poured me with incredible affection and unceasing support, without which, I would never have been able to make it this far. They have always encouraged for quality education and instilled in me the importance of education in the society. I am forever grateful to Mr. Narayan Patnaik, my uncle, and Mrs. Laxmi Patnaik, my aunt, for guiding me in choosing the proper career path. Sincere thanks to all my family members, close friends (Mr. Nrusinhananda Panda , Mr. PRABEEN KUMAR PADHY , Mr. Anil Kumar Patro , Mr. Debadutta P. , and Mr. Abhisek Samantaray ), and dearest ones (Dr. Dr Anwesha Garnaik , Ms. Priyanka Dash , Mrs. Manjil Devi , Mrs. Sonali Panda , Mrs. Suprava Nanda , Ms. Soumyashree Panda, Mrs. Soumyashree Bisoyi , Ms. Ipsita Gouda and Dr. Suchismita Satapathy) for their moral support and appreciation throughout my career.

Words would fall short for acknowledging the blessings and encouragements that I have received from my teachers. I am deeply indebted to Ramakrushna guruji, Bishnuprasad Dash guruji, Pratap guruji and Usha Sabat guruma from my primary-school days for never questioning my way of learning. A special mention to Mr. Gangadhar Parida sir from my secondary-school for always believing in me. I am forever thankful to Prof. Suraj Kumar Behera (NIT Rourkela, India) for introducing me to the research on air bearings during my sophomore year of undergraduate degree and for being my bachelor’s research thesis supervisor. I can never forget the backing received from Prof. Shih-Chieh Lin (NTHU, Taiwan), with whom I conducted my summer research internship on a bearing-lubrication related project during my undergraduate degree.

Being one of the very first recipients in India to be awarded with the prestigious Prime Minister’s Research Fellowship (PMRF) to pursue my doctoral research, I am very much grateful to the Ministry of Education, Government of India, for financially and morally supporting me throughout my doctoral journey. My heartfelt gratitude to my doctoral supervisors, Prof. Raj Kumar Pandey (IIT Delhi, India) and Prof. Jayanta Kumar Dutt (IIT Delhi, India) for inspiring and allowing me to work independently during my doctoral research. In the last five years of exciting research, both of them are always just a call/message away to listen to my concerns as well as accomplishments and show me the further directions. The best things that I have learnt from them are their truthfulness and ethical attitude, which I would value throughout my professional and personal life. I would also like to acknowledge the PMRF central committee members and my IIT Delhi student research committee (SRC) members: Prof. Sujeet Kumar Sinha, Prof. Ashish Kamalakar Darpe and Prof. Deepak Kumar Veershailiya for reviewing and providing constructive comments during my research progress evaluations each semester. Many special thanks to Prof. Michel Fillon (University of Poitiers, France) for collaborating with me on one of my research objectives and inspiring me to think bigger.

Significant accomplishments can only be achieved when the working environment is supportive and helpful. Therefore, I gratefully thank my co-researchers, Dr. J. C. Atwal , Dr. Niharika Gupta , Mr. DEEPAK MEHRA , Mr. Nitish Singh , Ms. Avni Goklani, Mr. Mayank Kejriwal, Dr. Dr. Rameshwar Chaudhary , Dr. Bansidhar Gouda , Dr. Ashok Atulkar, Dr. Pranabesh Ganai , Dr. Vivek Bhardwaj , Dr. K. E. Ch. Vidyasagar, Dr. Anupam Bhattacharya , and Mr. Ramit Kumar for providing me with numerous supports and motivations. I would also like to acknowledge Prof. Mihai Arghir (University of Poitiers, France), Prof. Benyebka Bou-Said (INSA Lyon, France), Prof. Michael Khonsari (Louisiana State University, USA), Prof. Christopher Dellacorte (University of Akron, USA), Prof. Tae Ho Kim (Kookmin University, South Korea), Prof. Keun Ryu, Ph.D (Hanyang University, South Korea), Prof. Christos Papadopoulos (National Technical University of Athens, Greece) and Prof. Andreas Almqvist (LUT, Sweden) for taking their valuable time to discuss mutual research in international conferences and inspiring me to grow further.

Finally, I would also like to thank Prof. Jayanta Kumar Dutt (IIT Delhi, India), Prof. Raj Kumar Pandey (IIT Delhi, India), Prof. Sujeet Sinha (IIT Delhi, India), Prof. Ramakrishna K (IIT Delhi, India), Prof. Subir Kumar Saha (IIT Delhi, India), Prof. Naresh Datla (IIT Delhi, India), Prof. Ashish Kamalakar Darpe (IIT Delhi, India), and all my undergraduate & graduate students for recognizing my duties as a teaching assistant in many mechanical engineering courses floated in the department in the last five years.

The doctoral work has resulted in the indigenous development of a first-of-its-kind high-speed aerodynamic journal bearing rotordynamics test rig, granting of two Indian patents, six high-quality peer-reviewed theoretical & experimental journal articles, and many conference talks/proceedings.
