New! Zips Codes By Radius Tool

Anthony, my partner at Cubit, just put the finishing touches on a new, free tool that returns zip codes in a radius.

Here’s how it works:

  1. Head over to?https://www.zipcodesbyradius.com/
  2. Select your radius distance.
  3. Enter your zip code.
  4. Press Search.
  5. You’ll get a list of zips where the center of the zip is inside the radius. You can copy and paste the list of zips.

New Canada FSA Demographics

Curious about Canadians? We all know they love hockey, maple syrup, and Mounties. But if you need data that goes beyond stereotypes, Statistics Canada just released updated demographics for Canada’s version of a zip code (or FSAs) – which they do every 5 years.

We put together this?resource?to explain what demographics are available for Canada and how they differ from US Census demographics. And?reply to this email if you need the recently released 2021 Canada demographics now.

Detailed 2020 Decennial Census Data Just Released

You may be thinking “Why should I care that there are 2020 Decennial Census data available? There are already 2021 American Community Survey data available.” Well, maybe you shouldn’t care! Let’s run through a quick checklist to see if you need to spend any brain power here.

Reasons to Skip the 2020 Decennial Data

1. The data aren’t trustworthy – especially for small geographies.

a. To protect the privacy of Census respondents, the Census Bureau have added fake data to the dataset. However, these additions have resulted in impossible scenarios like households with unsupervised children or occupied dwellings without people. Applied Geographic Solutions has written a series of blog posts covering?problems with the 2020 data.

2. No income data

a. The only variables that you can get from the 2020 Decennial dataset are: population, race & ethnicity, age and sex, group quarters, household type, housing units, vacancy status,?

i. There are no income data, education, employment, housing characteristics, health insurance, among other data on how people live.

3. The Decennial Census data reflects population on April 1st , 2020…which was during the upheaval of COVID.

Reasons Why You May Want the 2020 Decennial Data

1. Counts vs. Surveys (but remember #1 data aren’t trustworthy above)

a. Decennial 2020 Census data are based on counts of as many people as the Census Bureau could get to respond. 2021 American Community Survey (ACS) data are based on….you guessed it…survey replies from a small group of people.

2. Data for Census blocks (but remember #1 data aren’t trustworthy above)

a. Census blocks are the smallest geography available from the Census Bureau. Think a city block. And the Census only releases demographics for these tiny geographies in their Decennial dataset.

3. Urban versus Rural

a. Updated urban versus rural populations are in the Decennial dataset and you can’t get this data from the ACS.

4. Single year age data

a. Updated single year data (1 year olds, 2 year olds, etc.) are in the Decennial dataset, and you can’t get this data from the ACS for small geographies.

5. Group quarters data for jails, nursing homes, colleges, etc.

a. Updated group quarters data are in the Decennial dataset, and you can’t get this data from the ACS for small geographies.
