Our final 4x4 for this month will look at the extraordinary work of Rutu Modan. Winner of the Eisner Award for her first graphic novel, Exit Wounds and again for her book, The Property, Rutu is one of the top artists in her field. ?She brings a contemporary immediacy and offers a wry sideways glance at challenging editorial and publishing briefs.
As ever, you can see more work on our website, social media or Behance pages.
As an artist and graphic novelist herself, no one understands the world of cartoonist and author, Daniel Clowes like Rutu Modan. This image commissioned by California Sunday Magazine investigates the chaos and order of the artist's studio and it accompanied a fascinating article on 'The Golden Age of Comics'.
This thought-provoking piece highlights the creative process and the workings of an artistic mind.

Rutu Modan's second graphic novel created a warm-hearted yet nuanced story. ?The Property tells the tale of a family trying to reclaim the house they owed before WWII.
Her ligne claire style is unmistakable and brings a warmth and charm to this intriguing subject. As she commissions actors to perform the scenes before she draws them, each image has a truthfulness that draws us in and helps us engage in new and surprising ways.
Rutu Modan's editorial images carry themselves with style and a gentle collusion which encourages the viewer to ask questions. The quiet intrigue gives the illustrations the power to take on even the most troubling stories with a natural generosity of spirit. ?
This image for the New York Times is no exception. ?Commissioned to illustrate the story of NY heiress, Birgit Thyssen-Bornemisza and her almost pathological need for privacy, the series charted the spiral into a complete withdrawal from society.

Rutu's pieces are often complex and busy to reflect the hectic and often chaotic lives we lead. This lovely work entitled, 10 Ethical Decisions Everyone May Face in One Day is a case in point!
