The Other Side of Failure: Building Magnetic from the Ground Up

Well, this is it.

For almost two years now, I've written to you every Sunday. This is the end of this road, and the beginning of another.

Thank you for spending your time reading, learning, writing to me, and improving the world of sales and marketing for B2B companies all around the world.

From the bottom of my heart, I appreciate you so much.

Let's wind it back.


The Early Days

When I first started Magnetic, I thought content was everything. Lead generation? That took a backseat.

I stood tall with the gurus and told you to go all in on content, and the leads would follow.

But the truth? That strategy only took our clients so far.

For some, it would generate millions. There are and were variables outside of our control, limiting our potential for impact.

Those reasons included

  • Time - If done well, content is a time commitment. Most leaders don't have the time or the patience to then let content do its thing. I get it. For many early-stage B2B companies, they need both short-term and long-term revenue. Hell, let's admit it, they just need revenue.
  • Talent - It takes a certain type to make content that converts. You can get likes, even have your DM's light up. But to truly convert that to revenue, time and time again, takes extreme discipline. It takes top-down change like Paul DeLuca and Meritus Capital - Payroll Funding For Staffing Agencies . Paul and his team are committed to content and they are reaping the rewards.
  • Trust - If you don't trust me, or you don't trust the process, there is no use. In the services industry, there is a general air of distrust. And, for good reason. The #1 question I get in every sales meeting to this day is still, "How do we know this will work?" I don't ask that question when I buy software. Funny, isn't it?

We had to face the reality: content alone isn’t enough. If we wanted to scale, we needed a model that combined the power of both content and lead generation.

The gurus and I had it wrong—these two weren’t enemies.

They were partners, and we needed both.
