The Final Chapter

The Final Chapter

At the time the PIP (Performance Improvement Plan) was issued, the person receiving the PIP talked to me about the lack of metrics and a whole host of other concerns about the PIP.??Clearly, in the opinion of this employee retention trainer, the PIP was a joke and I felt that it was simply a way to set the person up to get rid of them.?Well, it worked!?The guy who received the PIP said, “I don’t need this sort of treatment.”?He started looking for another job and within three weeks he submitted his resignation.

Perhaps this is what the department head wanted.?I suspect the department head thought they would have the full 60 days in the PIP to prepare and smoothly transition the person out of the organization without any disruption to workflow.?It didn’t work because shortly after the person resigned, another person in the department gave their notice.?Now, the department is at 50% strength going into one of the busiest times of the year.

From an employee retention strategies standpoint, the actions of the department head were counter to the goals of the organization.?It was also counter productive from the standpoint of performing the work that needed to get done.?I found it interesting from the perspective that human resources wasn’t on top of what was going on.?In fact, this employee retention specialist would say that HR was missing in action!?So, it didn’t surprise me that HR didn’t even conduct an exit interview with the departing employee.?That is amazing!?The department is a revolving door and human resources is sitting on the sidelines.

What we saw in this whole debacle was totally contrary to the C.R.A.P. (Caring, Respect, Appreciation and Praise) philosophy which is crucial in employee retention.?C.R.A.P. builds loyalty.?It is also contrary to sound leadership.?Employee retention strategy must be a deliberate and planned activity.?It’s not something that happens in a haphazard manner. ?Make sure that’s the way you are approaching employee retention in your organization.

Remember…Give Your Employees C.R.A.P.??(Caring, Respect, Appreciation and Praise)? Why??Because C.R.A.P. Works!

?
