FIMIC is a guest on the Greenbiz programme!

On February 4, FIMIC was a guest on the Greenbiz programme which tackles fundamental issues such as sustainability and the circular economy, involving companies with a strong focus on the green aspects of production.

Taking part in a programme like this gave us the opportunity to talk about how FIMIC technology can actively contribute towards protecting our planet.

The interview allowed us to talk about the values which have always been at the core of our work and to touch on important topics for those who work in the recycling field, which we want to share with you.

FIMIC is a family business: this is the starting point and also the point of arrival. The starting point because, if FIMIC has achieved the levels of quality that are associated with it worldwide, it is precisely because every component of our machinery is designed and manufacture entirely in Italy in our facilities. And it is also a point of arrival because it is only by carrying out excellent work all-round, with transparency, clarity, honesty and without taking any shortcuts which could compromise the result, that we can fulfil the requirements of the customers who choose us.

The automatic screen changer, the heart of FIMIC’s production, is a machine invented by my father, Antonio and one that we have been manufacturing for twenty years. But let’s not forget that FIMIC has a much longer history. The company was founded in the 1960s by my grandfather who believe that the manufacture of guillotines for cutting up industrial waste was a product that could revolutionise production. Even back then, the key factors were ease-of-use, guarantee of results and speed of execution: the three pivotal points of our screen changers as well, whose flagship product, RAS, has reached 300 units installed worldwide.

FIMIC now employees 25 people who, every day, design and manufacture the best solutions for filtering post-consumer plastic contaminants, a fundamental operation. What’s an example? Just think about a detergent bottle with a paper label. How many are there in the world? But to be able to reuse the plastic part that makes up the bottle and recycle it, the label must be separated and the material filtered to eliminate any contamination. This is precisely what FIMIC does.

There are very few companies in the world that can produce this kind of technology, which has now spread to a large number of countries, from South America to New Zealand and from Africa to Asia, where the market has finally opened up to recycling. Here in FIMIC, it is important to be able to export our technology outside the confines of Europe and thus, contribute to achieving greater recycling results. In America, only 10% of the plastic produced is recycled while in Europe we are already at 30%, so there is still a lot of work to be done.

What is FIMIC’s mission? To succeed in being an integral part of the recycling world, one that is no longer concealed, by raising greater awareness about the environment. If, indeed, up until a few years ago the mere mention of “dirt” and rubbish was demonised, today fortunately it is a topic that demands attention, as well as being essential for environmental sustainability. Because a simple piece of waste can truly become a precious resource, by extending its life cycle and contributing not only to safeguarding the world in which we live, also to the circular economy. FIMIC takes an active part in all of this, promoting reuse and attributing the right value to waste, which we have started to use in the right way.

Trying to recycle as much as possible has also become a reality thanks to our technology, which allows us to recycle materials previously considered impossible to process because they were too contaminated and so, ended up in landfills.

And there is more: raising awareness about reuse, recycling and different recyclable materials is something we all should do. Which is why FIMIC is one of the founders of the Are you R project, a website and Facebook community with over 39,000 followers worldwide which has set itself the important goal of informing consumers, raising awareness about recycling and talking about the different ways recycled plastic can be used.

Recycling needs Italian technology. There is an amazing opportunity for development in this sector at international level and we are trying to expand our sales network from our main market in Europe to the rest of the world. Which is why FIMIC is constantly implementing all the production lines, so that each different type of plastic can be recycled in the most appropriate and efficient manner. Italy is at the forefront, along with Germany, in the number of recycling plants and in the production of technology for recycling plastic. But we don’t stop here!

FIMIC’s story is one that tells of family, creativity, made in Italy and the future. The future of new generations who not only deserve to live in a better world, but the future of the technology which helps to make it happen.

Our thanks to the Greenbiz programme for inviting us to appear as guests and for giving us the opportunity to talk about these issues which are so important to us.
