Filter Out the Static
Dear Essentialists,
Thank you for reading every week. And thank you for sharing. The community is growing every week.
Have you ever been busy all day but felt unsatisfied at the end of the day? Have you ever spent your time on email instead of doing a really important project?
Have you ever gone from zoom meeting to zoom meeting with hardly a minute to think of what really mattered?
Enter Cal Newport. A computer science professor at Georgetown University. The author of Deep Work, among others. He's a colleague, a friend and in some ways a kindred spirit. And if you want to do work that matters listen here.
Take back control of your day by doing the following:
1. Choose a place to do your concentrated work.
2. Use your morning for concentration and your afternoon for maintenance.
3. Divide your work into increments of 30 minutes.
4. Have a conversation with your boss and team about how much of your time should be spent on concentrated work and how much on maintenance work (like emails and meetings).
Thank you, again, for reading this. For listening to the podcast. And for inviting other people with you.
Greg
p.s. A shout out to Liam S. who wrote of this episode, "Two of the best having a conversation: Excellent discussion on taking control of your time and achieving uninterrupted concentration--well worth a listen." Listen and subscribe here.

4 年Love this. Between your book and Cal's book I have completely revamped how I use social media and technology. It's been a game changer and I hope to help many find the freedom that exists in being intentional.

4 年20 Years ago, inter-company emails became a critical communication channel for Lear Corporation, living in Canada at the time, we introduced the pocket RIM - Research In Motion device replacing pagers. As we developed machine interfaces with our assembly lines we were able to provide almost real time pings on equipment failure allowing us to respond to factory floor issues. It also allowed our management team to spend more time out of the office in the process while at the same time not missing a critical request from another area of the corporation. We were on top of our game. Within a year RIM introduced the Blackberry Phone and almost instantaneously every plant manager in North America was equipped with a mobile tool that allowed senior managers to actually spend time in the process on a GEMBA walk. Perhaps that was why Six Sigma was so successfully introduced across the corporation in a 12 month period. Unfortunately, today - the critical few emails a day are lost in at tidal wave of static from 100's of emails and texts ...........which have disconnected people from face to face communications. The tips provided by Cal Newport in the pod - cast provide a bit of insight on how to reduce the noise and provide some time for DEEP WORK
