Filter the Noise

Have you ever received criticism that made you second-guess yourself? Maybe it was a passing comment from someone who doesn’t know you or your work. Maybe it came from someone who never offers solutions, only problems.
We’ve all been there. A negative remark, an unsolicited opinion, or a cutting critique that sticks in our mind far longer than it should. But here’s a question worth asking:
Would you take advice from that person?
If not, why take their criticism to heart?
Not All Opinions Are Created Equal
Criticism is inevitable. If you’re building something—your business, your career, or even just a new idea—you will face good and bad feedback. However, not all feedback is useful.
Before you let someone's words shake your confidence, consider who they are:
? Do they have real-world experience in what they’re criticising?
? Do they genuinely want to help you grow or tear you down?
? Have they built something themselves, or do they critique from the sidelines?
Not all feedback is created equal. The best leaders and entrepreneurs seek input from those who have been in their shoes. People who challenge them to improve, not just point out flaws.
Next time someone criticises you, ask yourself:
Would I switch places with them in this area of my life or business?
If not, why give their opinion so much power?
The Power of Filtering Feedback
Early in my career, I worked on a project where a senior colleague constantly dismissed my ideas: “That won’t work.” “You’re overcomplicating things.” “Stick to the basics.”
For a while, I started doubting myself. But then I noticed something. This same person never offered solutions, never encouraged creative thinking, and wasn’t someone I would seek advice from.
So why was I letting their criticism hold me back?
That’s when I learned a powerful lesson: You don’t have to accept every piece of feedback as truth.
When you receive criticism, try filtering it through these questions:
?? Does this person have valuable experience?
?? Do they truly understand my goals and vision?
?? Are they offering feedback to help or to criticise?
If the answer is no, move on. Your energy is better spent improving, not defending yourself to people who aren’t invested in your success.
Most people who criticise you aren’t really criticising you. They’re projecting their fears, insecurities, or limitations. Don’t let their doubts become yours.
Your Growth Comes From the Right Mentors, Not the Loudest Critics
The best leaders and entrepreneurs I’ve worked with are selective about whose opinions they accept. They actively seek mentors, peers, and trusted advisors—people who push them forward instead of holding them back.
Instead of listening to every opinion, be intentional about who you allow to influence you.
?? Seek advice, not just criticism. The right people will challenge you, but they’ll also guide you.
?? Feedback should be a tool, not a weapon. Constructive criticism helps you grow; destructive criticism holds you back.
?? Your confidence is an asset—protect it. Listening to the wrong voices can make you doubt yourself. Surround yourself with those who believe in your potential.
Take Control of the Narrative
The next time you receive criticism, don’t just accept it blindly. Pause, reflect, and decide if it’s worth your attention.
Think about one piece of criticism you’ve been holding onto.
Now ask yourself: Do you think this feedback will serve me, or should I let it go?
If you’re navigating challenging decisions, conflicting feedback, or self-doubt, you don’t have to do it alone.
As a business consultant and coach, I help leaders and entrepreneurs:
? Filter out unhelpful noise and focus on meaningful insights
? Develop strategies based on trusted guidance, not distractions
? Build confidence in their vision and decision-making

Criticism is inevitable, but not all of it deserves your energy. The key is to pause, reflect & ask yourself: ‘Does this feedback serve me, or is it just noise?’ Trust your instincts. If it’s noise, let it go. If it’s valuable, use it to grow ??
