No country or American state has ever reduced its obesity rate. Fat people exist. Can’t we just all be okay with that?
Aubrey Gordon is the subject of the Jeanie Finlay documentary Your Fat Friend. The title comes from the anonymous blog where Gordon found fame, talking frankly about being fat in a world that rewards skinniness. I stumbled across Gordon via her podcast Maintenance Phase which debunks wellness fads and interrogates anti-fat rhetoric.?
While the podcast focuses on heavily researched facts and figures, Your Fat Friend is an empathetic window into Gordon’s daily life. And as we follow this brilliant, funny, and charming woman, you can’t help but feel maddened by the people - and the world - that relentlessly demonises her size.
Fat people have spent their entire lives changing to try and fit the world around them, the doc concludes, will you be the one they don’t have to change for?

UK film to help teach consent in schools ??
Tell me more
MUBI have partnered with Schools Consent Project and director Molly Manning Walker to screen How to Have Sex in secondary schools, alongside consent workshops. Manning Walker said of the scheme: “Watching it be used as a learning tool for consent has been the most emotional part of the journey for me."
Why this film?
How to Have Sex follows three British girls on a post-GCSE holiday to Ibiza. We see them at a formative time in their lives as they discover more about themselves, their friendships, and sex. It deals with matters of consent in a nuanced way, taking into account what is unsaid as well as said - an initial "yes" is not where consent begins and ends."Most women have had an experience like Tara", Manning Walker says of her main character, and like Tara, most women or girls shrug it off or stay silent. Using this film as a tool for teaching the complexities of consent could have a huge impact on educating and empowering the next generation.

New menopausal guidance at work ??
The legal rights of workers going through menopause has been updated by the Equality & Human Rights Commission. This new guidance means:
? Menopause symptoms can be considered a disability
? Employers MUST provide reasonable adjustments
? Suggested adjustments include flexible working, providing rest areas, or a relaxing of uniform policies.
Why should you care?
1 in 10 women who worked during their menopause were forced to leave their jobs due to symptoms. Many of these would have been preventable if workplaces were open about menopause policies and workers were empowered to ask for the changes they need - most didn’t because they were concerned about the reaction from their employer. There is still a shocking lack of understanding and stigma around menopause, considering half of the population will experience it. Shocking, though perhaps not surprising, clearly rooted in the sexism (and ageism) that plagues a lot of women’s health. This new guidance is overdue but welcome. We need menopausal people in the workplace, and all the valuable skills and experience they bring with them.
Anti-Muslim sentiments heighten in government
What's going on?
Conservative MP Lee Anderson appeared on GB News last Friday and launched into a tirade against "Islamists" in London, and accused London Mayor Sadiq Khan of having “given our capital city away to his mates." The ludicrous and downright racist comments led to Anderson's removal of the Tory whip. PM Rishi Sunak has said that the comments were "wrong" but refused to call them racist or islamophobic. Anderson stands by his remarks and will not apologise.
The response
At a time when anti-Muslim sentiments are skyrocketing, Anderson's comments contribute to this dangerous rhetoric within our government, and wider society. Sadiq Khan said that it had “poured petrol on the fire” of hatred against Muslims. In evidence of this, MP Dawn Butler had to seek extra police protection due to an uptick in racist abuse she said was encouraged by Anderson. This spike in islamophobia also works to demonise Palestine solidarity. As the attacks in Gaza continue, we must continue to call for a ceasefire.
